Will a 30 gal. tank be sufficent for a Lion? Im thinking just this one fish in the tank with some live rock?

Well i don't recommend it just because of my lion he likes to swim a lot and he is only 4 in and in a 40g and he looks slightly cramped, but if you are still determined i would recommend a dwarf fuzzy lion.

I think a 3o gal is definatly too small for any lion. A fuzzy dwarf can get to be 7" or so; and lions grow fast.

Are you planning on upgrading at all? I have had my fuzzy for almost a year. He is about 3-4" (including tail) now in a 55 with one other fish. This isn't like a tang that needs a larger aquarium right away. You could certainly house a fuzzy dwarf for quite some time in your 30, especially if he is alone. They don't require a great deal of swimming space and like their caves, but come out when the lights are on at night.

My fuzzy is in a 24g and has been in that (and actually smaller) for the past 3-4 years. The tank has some macro and a little LR in the back part (JBJ nano) and that's all that is required for mine filtration-wise. I actually don't have any water quality issues, I'd honestly tell ya if I did.

I agree. I just moved my zebra into the 55 tonight. He has been in my 20 QT for almost two months. He had way more than enough room. I moved him because a fuse blew that went to that outlet. I knew it had on the bathroom, but I have two. I noticed the power was out on that outlet many hours after it had happened. The only issue is water quality with lions, you have to be sure to test your tank, especially if the tank is new. They don't require a lot of room at all. They are happy with caves to explore, and hang out in during the day, and a nice meal. I feed my two every day. They don't have to be fed that much though. I was feeding frozen (defrosted w/ vitamins) krill to the zebra in QT. The fuzzy is in the display, with the hawk in my avatar, and inverts. I drop the formula food in front of him. He eats the bulk of it. The others get the rest. I would go with a Fuzzy in a 30. They take awhile to grow, and do very well. Don't put a lion into a new tank though. You can have another fish in there if you upgrade later.

Because of what a few of the above posts have said, I'll change my mind and say "why not". I've never kept a lion in a tank that small; but lions being quite "lazy" (I don't know how to spell "sedentary"), and the only fish in the tank makes me re-think.

I think you would be ok for a while with a 30, dwarf's grow slower than volitans. Ideally I would go with a 55minimum, but if he is alone it is possible.

The guy in my avatar (Dendrochirus brachypterus) is perfect for a 30g. He eats Mon. Wed. and Friday like the rest of my predators.
He was just a little popcorn when I got him a few years back.

Now he's a bruiser of a boy (or girl)....

K, I just looked in a bunch of references to make sure I wasn't going against the "norm" myself and they all say 30g as well.... is there a particular reason you were thinking a larger tank than that? I couldn't imagine putting mine in a larger tank than I have because it fits him so perfectly. Are you thinking fish size? Activity? Bioload?
I upgraded his tank size from when I bought him to now. He was first in a 5 gallon and then when he grew, I put him in a 12g. Then when you could tell that was getting smaller I put him in a 24. He has never indicated that he needs a larger one than that and it's been about 3 years in that one now. I can't explain what I mean by them looking like they are outgrowing their tank.... just all of a sudden they do.
Thanks snuffs..... he's a handsome boy.

I am not sure why people are so concerned about tank size with these guys. They do not require a lot of room and grow slowly. My fuzzy has been more than happy in his 55 that he now shares with another lion and a hawk. I would say it will not work if that were true. The concern is water quality. With a smaller amount of water there is less dilution of pollutants. Lions can be messy. I feed both of mine every day. They don't have to be fed that often though. I don't feed a lot at once. Just be sure that you have a good amount of rock and let the tank stabilize before adding the lion. IME they do not do well in new tanks with fluctuations.
