Hallo all,
I know that you sholdn't keep a volitan lion fish with any small fish. I want to take a risk and see if it's true. Does anyone of you keep a lion together with a smaller fish?
*my lion is about 4" at this moment in a 90 gallon fish only tank.

you can keep lions with large angels, anglers, boxfish, eels, foxface/rabbit fish, groupers or other lions.

Thanks for your replys guys, I do have a Coral Banded Shrimp and he kicked out the lion from his cave. It was amazed how this happened, they didn't really fight either. The shrimp just took his spot and the lion found a new place in the tank.

Individuals always have exceptions among them. That's just not the way that scenario usually plays out. I have an approximately 3.5 inch dwarf fuzzy lion in with a 3 inch Pink Skunk Clown, 3 inch 6-line Wrasse, and a 4 inch Bicolor Blenny. I couldn't keep shrimp in there with the Dwarf Lion. He eats ghost shrimp about as fast as they hit the water. I only give him those as treats, and to make him exercise. He's always taken dead/frozen food no problem, so I think now he's too lazy to chase his food.
Surprisingly my Neon Goby (I KNOW) and my Yellow Clown Goby (I KNOW) haven't disappeared, nor have I ever seen him go after them. I have tried trapping them and they just don't go for it. They have a 60 gallon Seahorse tank to go to. I don't recommend these tiny fish with lionfish, but so far, it's working out in a 75 gallon system. If anyone has any trapping suggestions please IM me.

Keep in mind that lions are Non-Aggressive predators, most eels (snowflake is usually OK), Large Angels, Puffers should be watched, many Triggers, these all are known to prey on lions.
Avoid adding any Frogfish, Scorpion fish or Anglers, they will prey upon each other. Which ever fish grows the fastest eats the most........
Look at it this way, Volitans grow fast, much faster than dwarfs, they can eat around 1/2 their size, if you plan on keeping your lion well fed so it will not eat the smaller fish than over feeding will eventually kill your lion.
TexasMetal said it right here "Individuals always have exceptions among them."
I do have two smaller blue throats 3-4 inches with my large volitans 12-15 inches, but they are fast, could my volitans eat them "Yes" .... lol However I would not put my little clowns in that tank, they would be food. It will also depend on what species of clown fish you are thinking of adding.

Expect around 5 inches (fuzzy dwarf), they can go to 7 inches but 5 would be the norm.

Yes they are fresh but if you have your lion on frozen already keep it there. Your lion needs a variety of foods such as: Raw Shrimp, Crab, Squid, Octo, Frozen Silversides, Frozen Sand Eels, Mussels, Scallops and so on. Soak all of your foods in vitamins, a lion that eats a staple diet of just krill will die, it will be a matter of time, so change the diet.
he looks healthy and comes out when lights go out.
This is normal, it may start coming out more as it matures, lions are night time hunters.....

A 20g is just to small for this lion, they produce a lot of waste, it will become tough keeping the water quality up.
I would not use coral supplements to soak foods, there are a few different vitamins on the market, I use either Zoe or Selcon to soak my foods.
