Lion Fish

To answer the question, the only other fish that comes to my mind is a dwarf angel. The problem with the lion is that any fish with it has to be of decent size. Most fish that will do well in a 38G would most likely get eaten by the lion do to their small size. FYI if you have a voiltan lion it can easily reach 15"+ and gets roughly about the size of a football in about 18 months. If you want to try a lion, a fu man chu would fit nicely in a 38G. They stay in the 4" range and you could then possibly slip in other fish with it. HTH:jumping:

Yea, FU manchu. They are really cool, stay small, and dont really eat other fish considering their smallness. It could like yer tank, and u would like it back.

Hey, Marks Majic, i read up some where that both the fizzy dwarf and fu man chu will both stay around 4 inches...if thats corect then i would say that both of those are ok, i know a guy that had one in his 20 gal for a few years now,as long as they are by them selves then i would say its ok...

Fu Man Choos are very difficult to get eating and ship poorly and even if they do eat its hard to get them off anything but live shrimp. Dont feed them goldfish or freshwater feeder guppies, thats just evil and deserves a good thrashing heheh.
Oh and as to the aquarium sizes, lions are one of those fish who can and will achieve full size in captivity very quickly. Fu's get bigger than 4 inches too, but I dont think a single one would be too big for that sized tank. But just think of the time investment feeding and getting live food for it before you buy it. Lions I have noticed are not one of those drop the food in the water and go kinda fish.

I think 35 gallons of water can support a single fuzzy dwarf without any problem (just looking at the volume). The only concern is that you have a tall 35, which means less surface area----> less horizontal space. Your future lion won't be able to move around freely in your tank. They are also a lot more challenging to wean off live food than Pterois sp, which gives you one more reason you shouldn't get a fuzzy dwarf.

A lion in a 35 is not the best choice in the world, especially if you have a high tank. Lionfish like room to swim horizontally. A fuzzy dwarf CAN get to be about 7", like already said above. A fu manchu however will only get to be about 4" in size, but I know from personal experience that lions do not ship very well.
If you can find a good Fu Manchu or Dwarf Lionfish that has been at a LFS or supplier for more than a couple days (I prefer a week), then get it for your 35. Fu Manchus are a better choice than the Fuzzy Dwarfs because they stay smaller, but the benefit of having a Dwarf over a Fu Manchu is that Dwarfs are easier to get on a frozen rather than live diet.
It's your call in the end, but I definitely would not get any lion for a 35 that is not already passed his shipping stress. Lions suffer a lot of stress from the shipping process, and sometimes, they are even caught via the cyanide method. This is why you need to give it sometime to see how healthy and stable the fish is before you purchase it. Once lions get passed the shipping stress, they are a very hardy fish.
