I finally have my 55 gallon tank ready for action and I've always wanted a lion fish but I don't know what kind of fish can go with him....any suggestions?

There are lots but it would be easier to ask what kind NOT to put with him actually.
No fish that can fit in his mouth and that includes full grown size.
And fish that are known nippers like triggers, especially a tank that small.
Can I ask what type of lion you were considering? A volitan is going to be too large for this tank very quickly. Are you thinking of a dwarf lion? You have more options if you go that route because of the size difference.

My volitan is 3 now and has to be moved to a 100g. He way outgrew the 65. We are picking the tank up from the acrylic guy tomorrow and opted for a 2' deep tank instead of the extra height. He would definitely like fin room and pacing room more than vertical room.

it took 3 years for the lion to outgrow a 65? I have always wanted one of these fish. The are unreal gorgeous when fully grown

I've had a couple well-fed Volitans grow from about 3" to almost 10" in 14 months or so. They're the fastest growing fish I've ever kept.

You can keep a dwarf lion in a 55 with any fish it can't swallow (don't underestimate this ability, they can easily eat fish over half their size) or any fish that will nip at its fins...especially triggers & puffers. A big, female maroon or Fire clown is, IMO, an ideal tankmate. Most dwarf Angels are good choices too.

Stick with the small ones (dwarf, fumanchu etc.) unless you have plans of upgrading later on. Volitans grow pretty quickly, mine is about 10 inches now and outgrowing my 100g quick.

55G=Dwarf Lion
Something to go with=Something not aggressive and something that when it is bought will not fit in the lions mouth or you will have just given it an expensive snack.
