I just got a Peacock lion and i wanted to know if anyone had any tricks of the trade to feed him. so far i have tried giving him some silversides.. they float. nogo... he did eat a live fish i gave him but would leave the others alone if they didnt basically swim to his face. is krill a little better?
i was told to hang a silverside onto a piece of electrical wire and make it swim ... any ideas?
thanx

Try small grass shrimp. If you already fed him today though dont worry about it. Lions I have noticed are really unobservant about what goes on in the tankwhen dealing with non-living food. My dad had to come over and feed mine for me when I went out of town and it drove him up the wall trying to feed it and not the other fish in the tank. Eventually you will be able to feed it from hand.
By the way, what is a peacock lion? I have never heard of that common name before, do you have a scientific name for it?

When I had my Manchu it didn't take him very long to start eating silversides from an acrylic feeding rod I made from a craft store for a buck fifty. Better than the 25 bucks my LFS wanted for a pre packaged one.

well, we are on our second lion, and i learned alot from the first one.....the one trick i use and now he eats anything i put in the tank, flakes, frozen krill, formula two, dried aglae, anything !! he'll eat anything for real!! i put a powerhead in the opposite corner of my tank so that when i feed them, the food tends to stay in the middle of the tank at the top, the force of the returned water and the powerhead spinns the food around, therefore he thinks whatever is up there moving is alive !! and of course lions being the pigs they are, like anything that moves and goes for it !! finally something that works !! my first lion would only eat live food, so i gave him to my bro, and i attempted it again later on down the road, and now we are so pleased with him !! my bro is workn with the other one , you should try it, maybe you'll get lucky too !!
good luck !!

that's a good way to get started something else to do is get him in a "frenzy" and throw frozen in
once he's hitting on LITTLE live add frozen that's thawed

I have a X-Large lionfish who eats 3-4 live med/lg goldfish. I have noticed that thjey don't like to eat "dead food". Try to feed him live fish and shrimp. Try goldfish, rosie reds and ghost shrimp.

DO NOT feed lions or any other salt water predator fresh water goldfish or freshwater feeder fish. Thats one of the worst things you can feed them. Over time it causes liver problems and could cause death. That goes for sharks as well. Get grass shrimp or better try to get the lion on frozen as soon as possible just for ease and cost. I personally feed mine, grass shrimp, frozen shrimp and formula 1 + sometimes he snacks on flake and 'pods as well(last two are incidentals and not primary food sources).

When his stomache starts to bulge out pretty good, stop. Lions will eat to death, one of the few salt water fish I have noticed that will. Too much food sitting in their stomachs and they will die. I usually fed mine one or two grass shrimp or a piece or two of formula 1. Lions grow really fast on a good diet.
