My friend, yes I have one, called today to say he got poked by his. Ran his thumb under "HOT" water for like 15 minutes and the pain was still intense. He did this last night and still had pain in his thumb this afternoon if he put any pressure on it.
"Henry it was like putting your thumb in a microwave then hitting it with a hammer!"
AND THIS...is why I never really looked into them

you just have to be very careful with them and watch where they are in the tank when you are doing stuff
Agreed and this friend has had lions for years and never got poked. Was moving a coral, the lion sitting off to the side with his head down, defensive posture?, and the friend just bumped him with his thumb.

Lois,
You know, or at least have SOME idea of the number of Scorpaeniformes we keep, and I can tell you that after over 20 years, I've never been stung, nor has Renee. This includes having just had to move them all (over 20 specimens). Your fish will become used to you, and all you have to do is pay attention while working in their setup (it will become second nature to know where your fish is).
There are lions that can be kept in as little as 25 gals (Fu Manchu), while the large-bodied beasts such as the volitans require at least 100 gals. For a fuzzy, you should go no smaller than a 30 gal, properly aquascaped. Do be aware that fuzzies are jumpers, so an eggcrate lid would be a good idea.

This particular lion is for sale locally, the guy who took this pic is selling him, I wonder if it's worth looking into?
That's a sweet-looking little female...I'd jump all over it!

Saxman,
Can any of them be in the same tank together or will they fight.. I have a 55 gal that I might set up as a lion tank after I get my 75 reef up and running?? Any input or suggestion would be welcome. Thanks in advance!!

Question time for Henry!
Can any type of Lionfish be in a tank with smaller fish? Such as clowns. Or do all types of Lionfish have a mouth big enough to eat the little fish?... No exception?

Question better directed to Greg (Saxman) about these fish. I have no direct experience with them and would only be relating my reading on them.

Greg, the question has been passed on to you then!

Can I place any type of Lionfish in a tank with clowns, and other small fish? Or will that just be a tasty meal for any lionfish?
Also, what I mean by any type of Lionfish, I mean any specific dwarf Lionfish. I know I can't with the volitans, but I am hoping there is a small enough lion out there that won't be able to fit my clowns into their mouth. Any idea?

Depends on the clowns.
The tank i got my engineer goby from had a dwarf in it and two maroon clowns and obviously they were a bit too large for the guy to take on so he was friendly with them instead.
there was also a big lawnmower blenny or some sort of good sized goby in there too.

A Fu would not eat them.... all the rest are a risk.
I can make do with a Fu Man Chu! Looks like a very cool fish. I did some quick research on it and see that it needs to be fed live shrimp to start out. I have a peppermint shrimp in my tank... would I be kissing him goodbye if I were to place the Fu Man Chu in my tank?

Depends on the size of the pepps. A big one no. Small ones.... depends how small. Wish-washy answer, I know, but it's why recommending tankmates is such a challenge. We are trying to come up with a way to consider all the variables in a guide.... wish us luck.
They will indeed need live at first and perhaps for the rest of their lives. That's why the Fus aren't as popular.... they are notoriously hard to wean.

I'm no lion expert (owend a big volitian) but id say any lion is going to snack on a peppermint is it can get to them. peppermints don't come out much though so he might be ok if he's smart.

when i had my volitan I dropped an emerald crab in the tank and the fish ate it on the way down.
luckly for my pocket book and the crab (and probably the fish too) he realized his mistake after a few seconds and spit it back out.
The guy who owned the fish before me always wanted a cleaner. so he looked for a long time until he found the biggest cleaner shrimp he could find thinking it was so large that teh volitan wouldnt mess with it.
On the way down. 25 bucks down the throat of the fish LOL

Hmmm... I don't want to have the fish eat him, I'd rather sell him back to the store so someone else can have him... but I don't think I'll ever have any chance of catching him without taking out all the rock. He is fairly big. He eats all the time and has a big belly, but that could just mean the Fu Man Chu is even more attracted to eating the shrimp in that case.
