So ive decided that i want a lionfish for my 55gal. Is this possible or should i scratch that idea? Its still cycling and its gonna be awhile but i want to start my research now. Also are they reef safe?
You could definitly do a zebra lionfish or a fuzzy dwarf lionfish even 2 in that tank i've seen it done and somebody on this board i think Sep has succesfully done it...
Does anyone know if they are reef compatible? I want a reef tank one day but dont know when that will be. So far the only definite fish is a lion. Im still pondering on what to stock it with.
Don't get a volitans.. standard 55's are 12" wide and volitans can get up to 15". Go ahead and get a dwarf though, that's what I'm going to do in my 60.

Ok, just researched the dwarf and they are not reef safe. Well looks like no reef for me. Any good suggestions on tankmates?
It depends what you consider 'reef safe'. Lionfish will not harm corals or sessile inverts (anemones, clams, feather dusters, etc), but are a threat to motile inverts (shrimp, crabs, etc) and smaller fishes. They also make reef tank water quality more of a fight since they produce a lot of waste.
Ok. Im going back to the drawing bord and im setting up my tank around the lion. As soon as i figure out how to post pics ill put some up for everybody to see the progress. Thanks alot guys.
I've seen many fuzzy dwarf lions in reef tanks by themselves...I think they are reef safe... Just no shrimp or crabs...For your CUC get snails like turbos, nass. and astrea snails...
if you keep your Dwarf feed, he is fine in a reef tank... I have a Medium Size dwarf in my 30g. I have cleaner shrimp that crawl over him, and he does not bother them, HOWEVER, is he lightening quick when it comes to eating Ghost Shrimp LOL
I am going to follow this thread because I want to do the same thing. I set up a 60 just for a lion and then got addicted to reefs so I'll see what happens with yours

Also keep in mind that each fish has their own personality. However, most fish due recognize cleaners and recognize that they are benefical creature to keep alive instead of having for lunch

Remember that lionfish are perchers. A football sitting on your coral everyday will kill it. I can't put any coral in with mine because he likes to sit on them until they die.

So you lionfish attacks your coral?? Mine generally likes to hang on near the HOB Protein Skimmer.
No, not attacks, just unintentionally irritates. A lot of perching/hosting fish (ie frogfish, hawkfish, blennies, lionfish, clownfish, etc) can annoy corals if they if they lay on them often enough. I've never had an experience where a dwarf lion did more than just slightly irritate a coral, but it can happen - as Cranberry can attest to.
Im gonna try some corals when i get the lionfish. Ill start with one or two and if all goes well ill add a few more. Any suggestions on corals? Im new so some relatively easy ones might be better. Also, im just starting to look at upgrading my light. Im leaning towards t5 nova pro. Nothing in this tank is definite yet accept the lion.
In my tank, I onlyhave soft corals., which is largely due to the lighting that I have for this particular tank. I have GSP, Kenya Tree, and I had Xenia, but the decorate crab has pretty much killed the Xenia
A quick update on my 55. My ammonia spike was so low and quick that im trying the cocktail shrimp method. I have all the lr in the tank that its going to get. Its somewhere between 55 and 65lbs. Very porous for fiji and haiti. It was all hand picked by me specifically for that reason. I swear it looks like i have 100lbs in the tank. I have aptasia but if it survives the cycle it wont survive the lethal injections its gonna get. lol. Its been sentenced to death. If anyone can show me how to post pics ill put some up. Thanks.
Im having wierd issues with my cycle now. Prob only because im new but thats in another post. My lfs told me they had ordered me a lionfish today. I was shocked at first because i had only mentioned it. They said that it will be like 2 weeks before they get it in and then another 3 weeks before i can take it home. Theyre gonna put it through qt before i get it. Im liking them more and more. Im looking at the corals they have and im not a big fan of them so theyre ordering more for me as well as some lighting. As soon as the cycle is done it should really start to look good.
The only thing they are sure of is that it will be a dwarf. They wanna qt it because they said the only supplier they get them through is hit or miss with them. My lfs is pretty good and wont sell me anything unless they know it can survive my tanks. Some how the guy i do most of my business with remembers exactly what each of my tanks has. LOL.
