i have had my lionfish for acouple of years. he's pretty big and has always been very healthy and still is. but lately anytime he opens his mouth to suck doen some frozen shrimp and other things i feed him his jaw gets like dislocated. sounds funny but then it stays like wide open and takes him like a mintue to unhinge it and then chokes on the food of course. when he does this i look at his mouth and gills and see nothing wrong with them. they are all the same and nothing out of color.. during feeding time him and my puffer are pretty rough and sometimes bite each other going for the food at the sametime. could he have maybe been hurt somehow that way? like a person pulling a muscle?

Its like a big yawn, right? Sometimes lions do that at feeding time, but is it like wen he snaps at the food? It could be just from old age. Exactly how old is he?

yes thats what it is. hmm well i have had him for three atleast- he wasn't real small when i got him. so not sure on the age. from head to back tail fin he is a 1ft long. swims around fine and still flares his fins at you if you come close to the glass. it inferces with his eating though..

A vols will reach full size in less than 18 months so if its only a foot long then it prolly isnt a volitan lion. A Russel's lion is very similar in appearance and habits to a Vols, but maxes out at a foot in length. Its possible the puffer hurt him, lions and puffers do not make good tank mates, but you would definately see the injury if the lion was hurt by the puff. Keep an eye on him, maybe Conogre will have some useful info if he still comes on here, he is the real aggressive fish guru. Try giving the lion smaller bites of food and see if that makes a difference.
