lionfish on hunger strike

Hi, I just joined and could use some help. My lion fish (7-8 ins) will not eat. It has been about 8 wks. I have tried, kreel, silver slides, live minnows, frozen squid & clam, ghost shrimp, left over bait shrimp and even an earthworm. He acts like he wants to eat, even chases the live food, but will not eat. I don't know what else to try!

What kind of lion?
How long have you had it?
Have you tested your water?
What else is housed in the tank with the lion?
Has this lion eaten for you in the past? If Yes, what did the diet consist of?

Lions can shed and many times will stop eating during the shed, shedding could mean stress, parasite, it can also be a sign of poor water or even poor health.
One thing I see is diet, lions should be fed a variety of foods soaked in vitamins (Selcon/Zoe), I feed Raw Shrimp, Crab, Mahi Mahi, Shark Steaks, Cray Fish, Ocean Perch, Squid, Octo, Smelt, Flounder, Red Snapper, Frozen Silversides, Frozen Sand Eels & Scallops.
At times when I feed raw shrimp, I inject the chunks with Cyclopeez & Vitamins for the extra nutrition, I also do this with young lions, sick lions or when a lion has stopped eating prepared foods and starts eating again.
They should be fed just enough to have a slight bulge in the stomach area, They can be spot fed 3 times per week or even every other day with a feeder stick.
A staple diet of just Krill & silversides may be the problem, it is best said in the lion info sheet by Frank Marini:
"In regards to the issue of starvation, the lionfish just stops feeding, and over a few weeks period cannot be enticed to eat by either live or prepared foods. Starvation is usually a result of long-term improper diet caused by the exclusive feeding of one type of food (freeze-dried krill is generally the most common cause because it's widely available and convenient). This diet can potentially cause a blockage of the gastrointestinal tract, or result in a nutritional deficiency, or result in the formation of a goiter."
The lion info sheet is here -->{edit link}
Another problem could be lockjaw, I have a black volitan that has been through this a few times but it always seems to realign the jaw within a few days. This happens if I feed a chunk that is to large. Look at the jaw very close, see it it is stuck open at all or does not line up.
IMO - You are looking at Diet or Lockjaw, Diet seems to occur right around this time (one year). Your lion is in trouble, it has been a long time since the last feeding, this lion needs food, I would try mollies or guppies at this point, you do not want this lion starving to the point of no return. If at all possible move you lion into quarantine and try the live foods, make sure it is not stress.

Thank-you so much, I have learned a great deal. I think you are right, diet is the problem, but I will double check the lion's jaw. What size tank should I get for the lion's quarantine or is there a way I can quarantine the lion in the tank I have now? I have used large plastic "hamster play balls" when adding a new fish.

I have used a 30g tank, Garbage Can or even a large container to quarantine in the past. Just place tank water, a heater and powerhead (make sure it has a sponge or guard on the bottom so the fins do not get shredded) in your container. Remember do not net your lion, you could cause damage, use a pitcher or bucket to remove the lion from your display.
Good Luck

Hi I have a volitan lion going on 2 weeks and no luck. Are you saying go get some guppys or try some other types of food? What would you reccomend? My fish looks and swims good. also I have a lunare wrasse same thing. This may be coincidental but I switched to RO water then these problems started. I also tested water and it cked ok PH even at 8.2. Thanks for any help Oh also in this tank which is a 92 gal corner I have a 6 inch grouper who is still thriving.

Six months, freeze dried krill, six to seven inches long. Just switched from tap water to RO. Seemed to start then. Also lunare wrasse same thing. Thanks

Two things could be going on, one is diet, this diet needs changed, a lion can not live off a staple diet such as Krill. your lion should be eating foods soaked in vitamins, you can feed foods such as: Raw Shrimp, Crab, Mahi Mahi, Shark Steaks, Cray Fish, Ocean Perch, Squid, Octo, Smelt, Flounder, Red Snapper, Frozen Silversides, Frozen Sand Eels & Scallops.
Another thing is stress, if there is environmental stress, a fish may stop eating, if the lion feels cramped in your tank (which a Volitan is not the best choice for a corner tank) it may stop eating.
I would try ghost shrimp, but feed the ghost shrimp something nutritional before feeding them to your lion & Wrasse. Let me know if they eat the shrimp....

No luck even tried a feeding stick, the wrasse has been this way a long time never had this problem until I switched to RO water, now what about the DI filter resin could it effect this? It just seems that this hobby is both frustrating and costly because I have yet to meet an honest fish store owner that will tell you the truth when it comes to buying fish. Its like buying a car, whether there is something wrong they will just tell you what you want to here. Example there was this blue ribbon eel so I ask the gentleman if it was a good pick for my tank and he says "no problem should be fine" so quess what lasts 2 days then I do research and it says not to keep in a aquarium will not live long. I guess shame on me BUT shame on them as the owner to sell this knowing the risks. Just venting. Thanks for your help

I am not sure, you may want to start another thread on this topic.
I am glad to hear you did not attempt the Blue Ribbon, the majority die in captivity. I Research everything before buying, if a LFS will not hold it for a few days than so be it, if it is there when I get back and I still want it, great. Patience and the Saltwater hobby just seem to go hand in hand. Believe me there are many fish I would love to have, such as a soap fish, I just seem to like those, but I could also be putting all my other inhabitants at risk, so I pass it up every time....lol
If your fish are stressed and not eating, chances are they will not start eating.
Did you try live ghost shrimp?

Yes, no luck, but if they are stressed whats the best treatment? Water test all ok.

Sometimes my lion goes weeks without me seeing hes eating, then he just starts like a pig again. Try using a larger silverside, and holding it so it is sticking in the tank and make it look like its swimming, mine always goes crazy when I do that.

I am happy to hear the lion ate, have you tried mysis with the wrasse?
If this lion eats krill again than try raw shrimp, it will be more nutritional, than try crab or scallops, or you can place a piece of food on the feeder stick and than a piece of krill, trick the lion into eating variety....lol
If it is environmental stress the only thing you could do is move the fish to a larger tank, you could see if your LFS can take it and place the wrasse into a larger tank to see if it will eat again.
