i Had a fuzzy dwarf lion. Great fish. After it got over its shy phase had lots of personality. I was told it would eat my decrative shrimp, but he never even bothered my cleaner or coral banded shrimp. He left all my other inverts alone also. In my opinion and expereince they are very reef safe.

Fuzzy Dwarf

I have 2 coral bandeds along with a few peppermint shrimps. The fuzzy's seem to just like to hang out. When I consider a fish to be reef safe. It means they won't bother the corals. For that matter, I would think most lions are reef safe. But IMHO the fuzzy's are the most docile.

All of the lionfish are safe with corals and such, but will eat any motile inverts (shrimps, crabs, etc.) and fish that they can fit into their expandable mouths. The larger lions can also be a burden in reef tanks because of the high amounts of waste.

how does a small 3" dwarf fuzzy lion in a reef with the following sound?:
2 clownfish about 1"
1 pseudo about 1 1/4"
1 algae blenny about 2 1/2"
1 strawberry crab about 1"
1 cleaner shrimp 1"
1 peppermint shrimp 1 3/4"
various hermit crabs and margarita snails
future inhabitants:
yellow tang
sailfin tang
more coral

i really like lionfish. will it eat any of those things i mentioned above? if a three inch one would be too big could someone give me an appropriate size

thanks

I had the big kinds of lionfish - volitan and mombasa. Tank size, of course, 90g. Larger would be better.
Both kinds are reef safe, but they like to rest on the corals, such as chili or black sun coral, with no harm done, just a gentle touch by fins.
Will eat the shrimp or a small fish or not - tricky situation. While the soft-shelled shrimp is a very good candidate to be eaten, the blood shrimp has much better chances, for a while.
Lionfish may not eat them for a very long time (1.5 years in my case), then one smaller fish and a blood shrimp disappeared. But 2-2.5" percula clown, damsel, chromises are alive and well in the same tank. All were there since their childhood.
Lionfish grows very fast - in a months, not years.
Very serious problem is with some lionfish, that may refuse to be weaned to the frozen food. Starving it for two weeks without food, offering only the thawed food, may raise the strong family protest. It's also a situation to avoid.
Not much help, but lionfishes have a great personalities, and are well worth keeping, if you have a large tank and can give away the tankmates at risk.

A lionfish and 2) tangs in a 75 Gal Reef...that sounds like a problem. The tang police will be on you.
