Lionfish Sting Question

I believe so. Someone made a post that they buried their lion in a box so no one could get stung by it. I know for a fact that when they lose fins those can still sting you, so I would think that a dead ones could also sting you. I read that in a book somewhere. Which doesn't mean that I am right.

yes it can, the venom remains in the spines even after death.

Yes , you could get hit from a dead lion fish.
The way it works is there is a small venom sack at the end of each spine. The spines are hollow, when pressure is applied to the spine the venom is injected thru the spine like a hypodermic. This is totally defensive. Watch when a lion feels threatened, they turn sideways and spread there spines to give max protection. So even if the animal is dead, pressure on the spine will still cause the venom to be released.

I was just sitting around thinking of nothing when that question popped into my head. I have been doing a lot of work with Lionfish lately and I don't want to come up on a situation that I can't handle. :cool:

Daniel after you get stung maybe I'll see you in the ER. :D I have worked on people biten by snakes and bees. But no lionfish.

Yes! I am the one who put my dead lion in the baby wipe tub. I am not sure if the poison is less toxic but still hurts.

How about this....
A long time ago I a green moray I had ate my volitan. He ate him head first. Could he still get stung while it was in his belly?
Would stomach acids eliminate the lion poison?
