FWIW, the severity of a scorp sting is directly proportional to length of contact, depth of contact (a deeper sting depresses the integument surrounding the spine more, which in turn squeezes the venom gland(s) at the base of the spine, thus releasing more venom), and species. Lionfish have one of the more mild venoms, followed by scorpionfish, waspfish, stingfish, and stonefish. Only stonefish envenomation has been associated with recorded human fatality.
