im not against the tangs but just get one and see how it does. the blue hippos tend to get ick so you might want to get a different one. in my 55 gallon tank i have a blue hippo, snowflake eel, fuzzy dwarf lion fish, and a porcupine puffer will not add any more fish. in a year when they get too big and are unhappy i will post a thread for free fish if my lfs wont give me credit for them. until then i will enjoy them. they get along fine and dont fight as long as i keep them well fed. and bear in mind that some grow very fast my hippo tang was the size of a dime when i got him he is now the size of a half dollar after one month but he doesnt act crazy and swim all over the tank he stays in one area and sleeps in his hole in the rock. just because something works for one person doesnt mean it will work for you. i have a ten gallon fowlr that only has a power head for water movement and a light no other equipement on the tank just becuase i have succesfully done this for a year doesnt mean i think you should try it. good luck and sometimes the only way to learn is to make your own mistakes.

The blue hippo tang will get too large for a 55, but the yellow tang will be ok. These are also of different genius, so if you ever do upgrade to a larger tank you could still get the blue hippo. The blue hippo isn't a good fish for a beginner, their skin if very prone to ick and other diseases like line erosion. Also, I would avoid the volitan, he will also get too large. A good substitute thier is the dwarf lionfish, which only get half the size of the volitan, which means they will have a much smaller mouth and you would then be able to get even perculas if you would like. I wouldn't suggest the goby though, they tend to stay around the bottom where your eel would be.
My suggestion:
1 Yellow tang
1 Dwarf lionfish
1 Dwarf angel(flame my fav.)
1-2 Black & White percs(my fav. for clowns)
1 Snowflake eel
1 Lyretail anthia(highly underrated fish)
This many fish and eel, make sure you have more than enough filtration and LR, possibly 2 canisters and protein skimmer. I could point you in the direction of some cheap, but quality canisters.

ok thanks for all your help
first off instead of the flame angel i really really like the convict tang
i like the anthias but i was always underthe impression tha they needed a much bigger tank
however .. none of the dwarf lionfish really appeal to me but i really love the voliton
thanks for all tips and hopefully future suggestions on equipment and etc.!!

I did not get past the first post so if this has been said sorry. I would not put that larf of a lion it that tank. Get a russell, if you want an active day time swimmer. This is the small er of the same family and is one of the two that are active. A zebra dwarf is and awsome choice, if you get a 55.
