Little blue balls?

What's the deal with all the tanks that have the little blue balls? Is that the sump? What do they do? I am new to this hobby so I am very ignorant; for now.

they're called bio-balls and they play a role in filtration. they are usually only supplemental filtration, though.

bio balls are very benificial in a fowlr or FO, but if you have a reef i would not use them, they just arent needed for a reef tank.
I have a 210 fowlr with 2 puffers and my biological filter (bioballs) work very well for this type of setup.
Alot of people will say that bioballs are nitrate traps, but they dont clean them and the bioballs become caked in crap...thus the nitrates.
I clean ~ 1/4th of the bioballs during my monthly water change and my trates never climb over 10 and my puffers are pigs!
A good clean up crew also helps! I have large turbo snails and large hermits in my tank, they seem to do a pretty good job cleaning my LS

Very good explanation.
In a tank with adequate amounts of live rock, bioballs are not neccessary.
