little help on Trigger set up

I'm new to the site and I'm not experienced with triggers. my LFS has a big ass Queen trigger (16") that's in its own 200+ gallon aquarium. It's name is queenie and is absolutely beautiful. The fish is full of personality and so fun to watch that I've decided to get my own 175 gallon Oceanic Bow front and house some triggers. But, by the sounds of It I'm going to only have one fish in this tank. Do you suggest live Rock with this set up? Or just a fish in a plain aquarium. I want it to have plenty of swimming room. What do you feed them? Queenie eats crayfish. If you have a sugestion on filtration and plumbing I need all the help I can get. UV? I want a very nice system. I know y'all have been there and done it.
Thanks Mike

I'm afraid a 175 might be a bit small. But, have some nice rockpiles on each side and open swimming room in the middle. she'll chew up the rock, so you may have to replace it every once in a while. Bo

Wow! Very disapointing. I thought a 175 would be big enough for a trigger. I was thinking about just one fish. Like a Niger or a Huma huma. How many lbs of rock without shrinking the tank to much?
Thanks

A queen and titan are out of the mix. Humu's and niger's can be housed in a 150 with some rockwork. I'm not sure on the poudage but you will be able to put in a great deal of rock and still enjoy the grace of a trigger.

With a 175 gal tank, you could CAREFULLY mix a few of the smaller triggers(and maybe a few other fish.) The queen and titan triggers would have to be kept by themselves though. I think a humu and niger mix would be pretty cool. Check into which triggers can live together in that size tank. I know theres a few members here who are mixing triggers together, they could help you alot more. Mixing triggers is a gamble, its hard to tell the actual temperment of a specific fish. You could end up with a humu thats really nice, or one thats really mean. HTH Good luck to ya! :D

The queen at my lfs is unbelievable... I could watch it every day. It will roll over and swim side ways along the front of the aquarium and really loves to show off for the people. My little girl (7) just loves him. So I figured I would set a tank up and hopefully have it cycled by X-mas. She kinda wants an ell too. Can I have one with a trigger? I live on the Chesapeake bay and have the Bay as my backyard. I have an endless supply of saltwater minnows fiddler or peeler crabs. Would they be OK for feeders? Do you have to feed them feeders? With all that fish parts do you have an ammonia problems? Thanks for your help,
Mike

I might be way wrong but isn't there a contamination issue with getting live feeders from the bay (pollution or otherwise). Just wondering...

There is always and issue of disease when you feed live food, regardless of the source but it is maximized by getting stuff from the bay. Realistically eels are super tough and probably wont get sick, triggers might be a different story. Although my niger trigger will just sit there and look curiously at any live shrimp in my tank and will eventually lose interest and swim away. I catch live ghost(grass) shrimp off of my dock and keep them in my fuge. Occassionally I toss one in to mix things up for my lion.(bad me, bad me). Another thing people say buy grocery store shrimp, ummm there are a few shrimp farms but they are more expensive and nowhere near as common as normal shrimp which are simply net caught and frozen and sent to the store. So pick your poison. :)

Please continue to browse around here, but by all means, GET A BOOK and read through it. You will be much happier as your fish will live longer and look better(because you will know how to care for it and give it the ecosystem it needs to live).
Good Luck, and welcome!

Well fellas I picked my tank up today and boy is it big. A lot bigger than my pee wee 46 BowFront. The thing I like about a bow front is it seems as though the fish is more 3 dimensional. Now, What type of wet dry filter do ya'll recomend? I ordered a R/O system capable of 85 gallons a day. I want it to have a top off switch in the sump. Are any of you familiar with that and if so what do I need to hook it up?
Thanks,
Mike

I've seen that Queen trigger. It is awesome. It was for sale last year, I guess he gave up on trying to sell it.
