That depends on how old your tank is and how much LR you have.

and if you have a place for the pods to reproduce (such as a fuge) so they're not completely eaten up in the tank, and therefore will provide a constant supply of pods.

when did you get the choc chip star? just fyi, they like to eat corals and inverts, so keep an eye!
They normally say that you should have an established tank for a year before adding a mandarin. You need a dense pod population because they just eat non-stop. you could check out this site: aquapods.com they sell live pods in a bottle, so you could add to your pod population that way. IMO, you should set up some sort of fuge to populate your tank with pods. This way, the pods in the fuge can't be eaten and will continuously produce pods. You can eve get a HOB power filter and use that as a fuge. i'm working on setting one like that up right now. Just take the top of it off, take all of the filger media out and fill it with chaeto, lr rubble, sand, etc., and put a light on top. It's awesome. You can find small pc lights that are like 9" to go on the fuge. It'd be a great investment not only for the mandarin and pod population, but for nitrates as well.

ok, cool. I've never had one, but i heard they'll jump on anything they can and devour it, such as hermits, snails, shrimp, and corals.

Is your filter material blue on one side and white on the other? Shouldn't the white side be facing up? I'm wondering if I have been using my filter material wrong for years......
Thanks

fuge is short for refugium. It's kinda like a sump, only it's a filter that uses live rock rubble, a deep sandbed, miracle mud, and/or macro algae to help reduce ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. do a search on it. It's the best filter there is IMO.
