Live rock and fish only set up

Just read a book that claimed LR needed the highest water quality and lighting. It went on to say it is not suitable for a fish only set up.
Is this the general opinion or is the book out of date?
My LFS sells it for £18 kg (can get it cheaper mail order) so I don't wanna mess up on this one!!!
Thanx

You must not need really good water. Because i was told to cycle my tank with live rock. And my tank is doing great now I have snails and sponges and I know what else crawling around.

Maybe there was a different aspect on LR having perfect water. If not I maybe look into a different Ref. for your SW. I have always had LR in my FO tank. Is it a have to, Prob not as many Fish stores keep the fish in there without. BUT LR also as stated before is a very strong part in Filtration. I have even ran my tank with just a powerhead and used crabs and Rock as Filter. Water remained pretty good. I wouldnt do this without knowing what you are doing and having a TON of LR. LR plays a big part of a tank whatever you have in it. Fish east the stuff off of it, and it's a natural hiding place for them. It serves many other purposes but youget the picture....

COL,
£18 per kg, I guess you are in the UK. That is way over priced. Don't know where you live but try STM in Sevenoaks or Shirleys near Birmingham.
I'm not sure if i'm allowed to link here but as this is a US board and i am putting UK links, i assume its OK because US shops won't ship LR to UK (No loss of business for SWF)

If they get deleted, do a search for them on the web.

I have one older book that mentions that about live rock. One of the most important qualities I look for when I purchase a book in this hobby when it was written, and the latest edition. anything more than a couple of years old will most likely be outdated. In the days when expensive man-made filters were preferred over the more natural methods of today, live rock was a luxury. Now it is a mainstay and an important part of the hobby, and I also believe that shipping and handling methods and captive propagation have increased the quality received. When reading older books take them with a grain of salt, and as always bulletin boards like this one are never out of date!

Mr FISH
Yeah you got it, I'm in UK - North East.
Thanx for the links. I knew I could get it cheaper online but it is still an expensive business if it aint gonna work. However, it looks like the book is outdated and I will be getting some soon (try a few KG first rather than spend £100s).
Cheers

I agree that LR does not need great water quality but rather contributes to it. LR has many different organisms in/on it and maybe some would not be happy with less than ideal conditions but on the other hand some more bacteria will take their place that thrive in less than ideal conditions. I would tend to think that LR in a dirty tank would have more life than in a clean one since there would be more "stuff" for the organisms which populate it to consume.
BTW, LFC for the EPL this season.
