Live Rock and Sand Question

OMG! That's a HUGE amount of rock!! I know I'd order online if I had that much to consider!!
Economics do play a big part in all of this -- I've already put over $300 into my setup, and I already had a lot of it (it was one of my FW tanks). I'm also going to be buying a pc light setup and diving into corals, so by the time my *small* tank is done, I'm sure I'll have close to $1000 invested in it. I can't imagine the final cost of doing a large tank!!
So I guess for a small tank, hand-picking LR is best, but for a larger setup, buying bulk online is best. I'd even argue that LS is LS is LS and go with whatever's cheapest... or better yet, get play sand or aragonite and "seed" it with a little LS.

LOL - I'm putting together two tanks using one filteration system, a 180 and a 250. You should see the bill for the lighting I'm putting in 1450 Watts on the 180 and 2200 Watts on the 250!
I just ordered a custom sump which is 40? gallons and has 4 1" outlets and 3 1" inlets to handle the 19" x 19" footprint of my Euroreef CS12-1 PS.
In other words, this is one heck of a project!!! LOL Without coral it is looking like the final cost of these two tanks will be substanial!

wow, from a 40 gallon to over 300 gallons, that a serious upgrade. i am always so jealous when i hear someone is upgrading. isn't that terrible? i haven't even had this setup for 2 months and i already want to upgrade (AGAIN). well, sounds like you have it all well planned out, im sure it will be a good looking setup. congrats

Your right!! Going to 430 gallons from a 45 is quite a jump and was part of the plan to begin with. The 45 was the learning system. That way when I started the larger systems we (Corals and me) would be in better shape!
Sometime next month I'll start posting pictures and may even do a website to show the work in progress!
Another part of the plan will be to have around 1500 gallons in this basement when I'm done. Every wall will have a full system. The final system will be a 12' x 3' x 2 1/2'. Can't wait to build that one!! It will be a few years before I get to it though.
