the best thing to do is get a whole lotta base rock (lace rock works and is avail at many LFS) and then add like 10 pounds or so of LR.
I skipped the LS and bought southdown as I just couldn't spend the 100 bucks to fill my tank with LS. Now I have about 75 pounds of rock and 3-4 inches of sand. W/ 50 lbs of LR it cost total maybe 200.00. I could have done it with a lot less LR though, spent less than 100.00.
LR is the way to go, but I side with you on the cost of rocks... it is astounding and everyone thinks I am crazy for spending so much money on rocks...
but then they see my tank and are like: 'wow that is awesome'.
so it is worth it i guess lol

The reason most people don't recommend getting sand and rocks directly from the ocean, is the undesirables that may tag along with the stuff fresh out of the water.
Most live rock purchased from a online site or store has been "cured" and sprayed to get rid of the organisms that may not be benefical to a closed system like your tank.
There are people who do exactly what you have done and do very well, some do not.
Most folks see it as just another way to add additonal headaches to setting up your tank!
That is why most don't recommend it.
You have yours set up, so just go with it!!!!!!!!!!!
