Base rock normally is not cured nor does it have very much growth on it. Premium is normally fully cured and will have far more color and growth. premium or base will be all different shapes or sizes.

No problem. there is also a lot of other live rock you will read about like kaelini, haiti, florida, tonga. they all have differences.

What would be a good variety for a 125 gallon tank?
I was thinking 100lbs of base, 30lbs of branch and maybe 30 lbs of lace or something else? I've seen a few places that sell lace lava rock real cheap which they say can be used in a saltwater tank but I've heard otherwise?
Or should I be looking at another route?
I've never aquascaped before so I'm unsure of how the rocks fit together, can they be layered on top of one another? How it would look when done. It's hard to picture in my mind as I've never worked with it.
Sorry for all the noob questions. I'm just trying to cover all my bases before I start ordering stuff. I'll be getting the tank next month and am planning on ordering equipment, sand, LR, ect... aroudn that time.
Thanks,
Dred

My LFS sells mixed cured rock and my pieces varied in size from 6" to over a foot. Plus it was only $4/lb! I'm staying with the mixed....

Try useing base rock for the back of the tank to help stablize the top section with your LR. On my 75 I have 120# and I have only 3 20# Fiji rock that is touching the sand. Then on top I made like little bridges and caves. I like the looks of the tongue. So for would go with like 4- 20# Fiji Premium, 60# small Figi premium, 30 tonga and 6" base rock (about 40#). If you go with that your tank will look pretty full. That will be 210#. It would give you alot of size difference, texture, and shape so that your eyes will just wonder all over the tank.
