Is there anythink that can eat live rock? I have started to see holes in my rock and have know clue to how it is happening. The only thing i can think of is there are snails that i did not put in my tank. There shells are shaped like a cone and what ever is in it you can see at the bottom of the cone or when it is on the glass. Any one have a clue if this is what is eating my rock or is this what will happen to the rock as time goes on it will brake down even more.

Some clams dig holes into the rocks...they burrough in, right up to their mantle so they are barely sticking out....

This is a natural process of live rock. More than likely its those microscopic animals you never see that burrow into the rock. This is a good thing however and shows that your live rock has life. Snails are very powerfull at scraping live rock clean of various types of alge. One other note of intrest is that live rock is very brittle and pourous and is made up of shell, dead corals ect. If you look at your live rock up close little tiny spiral shaped tubes are found in and around the live rock which contain tiny worms that burrow into the rock. The possibilities are endless when it comes to live rock. Happy reefing
