Could use a little more info on your tank before making reccomendations..such as :
Are there any other fish in the tank currently...?
Type of filtration currently using,
Any live rock in there now...?
How long has the tank been set up ?
Were you "cycling" with the hippo ?
Depending on what you have going currently will guide reccomendations for future set up...
In "general" LR can help in filtration, which can reduce water related stress which contributes to Ick...but won't keep them from getting ick if it's currently in the tank...

You could successfully treat the ich right in your tank using hyposalinity. Check out the procedure in the FAQ Thread.

What are your water parameters. Sorry for all the questions but it was probably 99% chance that your water quality was bad. Ich is one of the more trickier diseases. You actually had ich in your tank before your fish got it. The eggs have to hatch and then they are free-swimming. So that means your water quality was not good.
Beth, does Hyposalinity kill all the forms of ich or just the free-swimming parasites? And I would get some liverock just to help after all this is done. It will help the water quality a little.
