live rock in the sump?

I have 240 gallon with clown trigger, niger triger, lionfish, snoflake and tusk.
My bed is regular sand. I was told not to add live rock or live sand to the tank as it was expensive and would not be "live" very long with my aggressive fish. I believe both however help reduce nitrates.
1) Could I add live rock or sand to the 30 gallon sump below the tank? Or is there inadequate lighting and supplements for it to flourish?
2) Would I be able to add enough live rock to make a dent in a 240 gallon set up?

If you add rock or sand to your sump your going to really dirty your water. If you have a pump returning water to your tank It is going to get clogged fast. It will shoot the live sand into the tank. Also you are suppost to have a pound per gallon of live rock. There is no way you can add that much rock into your sump.

Live rock CAN be added in your MAIN tank.although your fish may nibble at it,it will still be "live".What makes the rock "live' is the bacteria that it houses. This added bacteria media in your tank will help to stabalise the bio system in the tank, and add to your overall water quality....

What about LIVE SAND? I keep finding conflicting reports on the site.
1) Do you syphon/clean it with and fish/aggresive set up? How about with a reef set up (seems impractical to move all the rock)?
2) I also read you need a detrivore sp? set up (starfish/worms) to keep it live and turn it over. I can't imagine my triggers would let them live very long!
I am thinking of going with live sand only in my reef which I am setting up now and not adding any to my aggressive set up. Maybe just some live rock in the tank?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have not had any experience with live rock or sand before.
