I have an 18 gallon tank with live rock and fish no coral. What type of lighting is required for the rock? As of now I just have normal house lights in my tank are these sufficient for the rock?

NO.
You need marine tank lighting on your tank. Since you don't have any coral it doesn't have to be intense lighting, but you need something better than house lights.
Do you plan on adding coral at a later date? If so I'd recommend looking at Current Nova Extreme T5HO lighting. I really recommend it either way, but definitely if you're thinking about adding coral.

No i dont plan on adding coral in the near future but it is not out of the question.
Look into the lights I listed above. They're not that expensive in the grand scheme of things and this way if you do decide to add coral, you won't have to upgrade again.

ok cool thanks.. I actually just bought a 20 watt mini compact flourescent. It has a daylight bulb and a blue bulb. How sufficient will this be and what type of light cycle should i use for my fully cured rock?

That may be alright as long as you're not going to add coral.
I prefer 10-12 hours days. If you have two separate switches for the blue and white lights, leave the blue light on for an hour by itself each morning and night (a total of 12 hours) and have the white light on for 10 hours. Some people do the same with a 8-10 hour day with fish only tanks.
