Hello,
I purchased this live rock off of a competitors website ending in Aquaria. It was their Nano package x2. This is for a new 29 gallon coralife biocube build. Am I wrong to be totally disapointed in the quality of this live rock.... It seems more like base rock to me. What are your opinions.

Hi,
Base rock has no life, it is dried out and it's only use is to help build up the rock, it will eventually become live rock when you have enough critters to set up house and move in. The rock you got is not base rock...because it was rock sold for a nano tank, it looks like broken portions of branch rocks. I used branch rock in my seahorse tank so I recognize it. The branch rock doesn't look like the regular LR, it has fewer nooks and crannies but it does have the same good critters. I do see some some light touches of coraline here and there on it too, so don't be disappointed.
I always hand picked my rock and looked for some nice purple on it to help build up the coraline. I never understood purchasing rock on-line if you have a fish store within 50 miles, it's heavy and it has to be cycled because of die off during shipping anyway. I'm sure in a few weeks you will start seeing life emerge on the rock, just like the rock we buy at the LFS.
By the way...I like how you stacked it, it looks good...
I hope it is very stable and you didn't build it on top of the shifting sand...rock must be on the bottom and the sand added afterward...if you did build it on the sand, remove the rock and push the sand to one side...rebuild your rock and push the sand back around it. It's hard to tell in pictures if the rock is on or under the sand, so I figured I would say something just in case. I wouldn't want you to have a rock slide that could crush your critters or break your tank.

Hello, Thanks for your replies there are a couple of pieces up at the front that are just sitting on the sand but the main structure in the back is on the glass with sand around it. I'd appreciate a couple more opinions on the rock if anyone has anymore.
Thanks

I dont think its very high quality live rock. it may be bacterially alive but there is little else on it. Some light coraline here and there but overall its very poor excuse for live rock. IMO

Depends what you paid for it if $4 or less good deal, if more than you were ripped off. Brown rock as I call it around me goes for 7.5 to 8 LFS.

Well you saved a $1.00 a pound so unless you bought 30lbs and you live 300 miles from the closet LFS you made a deal. I say bad get your money back.

Yea, In Montana I do not live anywhere near a " good " LFS. Aquaria has graciously given me a credit to my account for the full cost of the rock.

Glad it worked out well for you.....Some might "consider" that LR, but that definitely isn't quality from the source you bought from......That is definitely base rock.....Not porous at all from what I can see in the pics.

Picture #3, it isn't like regular LR, but it is porous. It's chunks of branch rock. Anyway, they gave him credit and that's great. OP wasn't happy and that's what matters. I purchased branch rock because that's what I wanted for my seahorse tank. Below are some pictures of the different types of rock. LOL...Next time, stay with SWF.com
