Dumb question.........Is live rock necessary for a fish only saltwater tank?
If so, then how much is needed for an 80 gallon tank and what kind of rock?
Currently have crushed coral base
OK..No question is stupid in this. We all need to start from somewhere. So the answer to your question is NO. It is not needed but it does help with looks and is a very good natural filtration. For a 80 gal tank, you would appx need need 80 to 100 lbs. It's generally 1 to 1.5 lbs of rock per gallon. HTH Chris
No it's not mandatory but it sure looks more natural and like smythie said it really helps with filtration. Something you can't have enough of in my opinion.
It would also help to keep your fish happier (IMO). My fish, before I had LR, were so bored that they didn't move much. Now that I have some caves and areas to swim, they are alot more active.
