Did you scrape off the dead matter? What are your water readings. Keep a close eye on your ammonia. If you want to preserve whatever life is on it then try not to let the ammonia spike over 1ppm.
usually getting up and walking around the tank is a pretty good indicator it's alive. Kidding but I am pretty sure that if it smells bad, thats not a good thing. I think that is uncured rock. Never had any uncured my self so I couldn't tell ya.
i kno it was uncured... the cured stuff was almost 10 bucks a lb... but all my params are stable so i guess it's "live"... and it hasn't got up and walked around the tank yet... i' still waitin on that lol

LOL you will be waiting for a LONG time. Check your ammonia twice a day. Did you put this into your display??
i bought the rock sand and water all over a month ago and put everything in... my lfs said it had cycled and i got fish... and everythings still alive... i'm just not gettin any growth on it ya kno... everyone on this site is talkin about coralline... dude i can't get that mess to grow i i wanted to

Alright, it sounded as though this was new stuff (it is new). Can you get a picture of your rock? It takes awhile to grow if you have dim lights.

That will take quite some time for the coraline to grow. It will, but it will take a LONG time.

Relax, the coraline will grow. It will grow very slowly with stock lighting, but it will grow.
