Live sand and rock for 30 gal

Hello, I'm a newbie, and I was wondering how you determine how much live sand and live rock to put in a 30 gallon tank? also a friend is giving me a tank, and he thinks it's 30 gallons but he's not to sure, he gave me the diamensions of it, and it seems like it's a bit bigger than 30 gallons, is there a way to tell how many gallons a tank is ??? Sorry about all the questions. Thanks

depends on how deep you want to have your sand bed and what look you are going for. most people will use 1 lbs of live sand and 1 to 2 lbs of live rock per gallon.
in your case that would be 30 lbs of live sand and 60 lbs of live rock.
