Live Sand

Thanks to those who responded. I had some more questions. Does the live sand have to be added to saltwater? My dealer told me that it didn't matter. So I added the sand to the tank while it had only fresh water in it. About 30 mins. to and hour latter I added the salt mix. Do you think I screwed things up? If so, how would I know that the sand is dead?

well, since everything that was living in there came from salt water i would imagine that you possibly killed some of it, if not all of it. i cant say that im 100% sure im just using common sence judgment on that one.
good luck,
chris

Puk-
Sand will not just turn "live" after a month. Once your tank cycles that sand will have bacteria start to develop in it. so in the sense of the word live it will be "live". But the live sand we are all talking about is sand that has worms, starfish, pods, etc. in it. That won't just come with time....it must be introduced via live sand or live rock from a lfs.

I bought live sand - my bio filter recycled in a day and my nitrates have dropped (I replaced my CC with LS). I am going to purhcase the live sand (with the worms/etc.) from this site after Christmas.

i think saltwater bacteria and fresh water bacteria are totally different and putting one into the other will kill it off its the same as putting a salt fish in fresh
you can mix dry sand with ls it will eventually become live just takes a little longer ;)
