My LFS advised me on putting CC and live sand in my aquarium. It's been up for two weeks now, but after finding out more about CC I want it out. Any adivce on how to take it out without draining and starting over?

LS and CC together!?! Wow, LFS messed you up there. I can't think of anything better than a sifter. I think you are going to have a bit of a mess no matter what you do.
Remember...never believe what a LFS says without checking it out on a message board first. 90% of their advice is bogus (if not more).

That's a greater idea with the sifter. Do I just use cups to scoop out the substrate? And how much sand should I have in 30 gal tank?

I have 60 lbs. in my 55 if that gives you an idea, but in a smaller aquarium the more sand you have the less room, so maybe 20 lbs? The 60 lbs. gives me 3 inches or so deep

Hmm...okay. I'm one of the newbies to the hobby (had some fresh-water fish, but they didn't survive too long. So, naturally, I decided to up the bar and go with salt-water! :D ) The folks at the store advised I ad CC as well. I bought it, but it's not in the tank yet - I'm almost done curing live rock in the tank. Why not CC and what are the other options? Live sand??

CC traps detritus and is too large for most sand sifters to clean up. CC can contain sulphur pockets due to the decay of trapped food and waste and if it gets released you will lose everything in your tank in about two seconds. This is the same reason we don't use undergravel filters. Use live sand, aragonite, but never CC. Don't worry though, I was given bad advice before and had to remove all of the CC with a net :(

Why did you go with saltwater if you couln't keep freshwater fish alive for long?
Salwater fish will be alot harder to keep them freshwater fish.......................

Because I learned from the first experience: I went much too fast the first time around, had too much fish. Incidentally, not from personal experience yet, but many people argue that salt-water keeping isn't really that much harder than fresh-water. Some argue they're actually easier because salt-water fish tend to be more disease resistant. Are people perpetuating a myth about marine aquarium keeping that keeps the club exclusive? :happyfish

It's an interesting read, but it seems to me you are talking extremes in both directions.

Yes and No.
Yes it's an extreme, but somehow you always end up at that extreme.
Basically what I'm saying is once you get $1,000's invested in livestock, Which you can Easily do, You'll spend whatever money you need to, to keep up the tank.
Which includes Generators and other such extreme measures to save your tank.
Ask anyone here who has Under $1000 into thier tank and I'll bet you get only a few people.
So It's not really an extreme when you think about it.
I have a 180Gal Agressive Freshwater tank which costs me less than my 46 Gal SW to maintain.
And that's a fact. If you want I could list out in detail the costs.
The wife makes me keep track of how much i spend. And it's Insane.
And while we are at it...If you can point out which Items you think are "extreme"
I'd be more than happy to share with you my thinking...
