live sand

I've been looking for agrogate sand for some time now, with no luck. I finally ended up asking my LFS if they sell LS. Turns out they do... $40 for a 20lb bag. Not a bad price in my mind... $2/lb. But it seems odd that they sell it in a pre-packaged bag. There is definitely some water in the bag, but only enough to keep the sand wet. The thing that I find odd though is that there is no (or very very little) air in the bag. Seems like if it were true LS, the bacteria and other critters would still need to absorb O2 from the water... but there's no air in the bag, so no gas exchange. Does that seem right? I just don't want to get ripped off.

If its natures ocean LS read the bag carefully. They add a special additive to keep the bacteria alive for an extended period of time. There is also an experation date on the bag.

Natures Ocean LS is highly recommended. If you are in the east, you can use the famous Southdown Tropical play sand and a bag or two of the Natures Ocean to seed your sand bed. You aren't being ripped off if you get Natures Ocean. This site sells it I believe. Good luck. COOP.

It's great stuff... I used 10 20-pound bags to jump start my deep sand bed for my 90 gallon. It was worth every penny...

I spent $30.00 for 150 lbs of Southdown sand for my 75 gallon. The stuff looks awesome.
I then bought 2 detrivore kits to get the necessary copepods, isopod and worm population up to speed.
