Quick question. I have a 180 and I have a seperate 17 gallon fuge. I had to take the fuge out to repair and I put the live sand in a 5 gallon bucket. When I go to put it back in and hook up the system will there be a ammonia spike from the sand being taken out and then placed back in? I is moist in the bucket with no water right now. It will probably take about a week to fix the fuge.

WELL you should have put SW in with it, a heater, and a powerhead
after a week it will be dead sand

its not truly alive..
there might be few bacterial culture still alive i nthe bag of sand. But the LS at the store stays alive because theres a little bt of water put into the bad plus the store temp usually keeps it going. But most of the culture i nthe sand we buy that live is dead, and thats why we still get the ammonia spike and have to go through the cycle. With those few cells left they start to reproduce under the right conditions again!

Ok well I just added SW, a heater and some circulation. Its been without for about 25 hours. Do you think it will be ok to add back in the system next weekend? Keep in mind this is about 3.5 gallons of sand in a system with about 270lbs of LR and 250Lbs of Live sand.
