Live Sand

A lot of people suggest that i buy live rock and a little live sand adn then just get regular sand and the rock and live sand will seed it....I live in New York, what type of sand do i buy and where can i get it?
 
hi HNF2k, you can get live sand from ur LFS... NATURE'S OCEAN BIO live sand, they are alittle costly though ... so just buy one bag of it, then go to Home Depot.. and get those cheap playsand... very effective ^_^

Not to step on too many toes, but bagged live sand is pretty useless. It only contains bacteria and the grain size is too large. I would suggest avoiding it.
In NY you can get Southdown Tropical Play Sand "From the Carribean". This is good stuff.
Once that is in place get some Live rock, then some Real Live Sand with bugs and inverts in it.

Oops... sorry. Home Depot sells it. If you have a local reef club I'm sure someone will know where to get some. It's usually located in the garden section in red, white, and blue 50 pound bags.

I still say the bagged live sand is good stuff as long as you put your own detrivore kit in there. Not to mention, if you put live rock in the tank, your bugs will move to the sand also. Not saying that it is the best stuff but for the price and convience it is pretty good stuff..
