Local ***** horrors ...

Went in tonight for some phosphate sponge and a RO filter - there was a person that had tank set up for 5 days getting water tested and asking the clerk questions. After many corrections and alternative routes I still remember the biggest 2 flaws: 1 from the clerk- just float the bag for about 15 min and dump them in (2 damsels)- I had to tell proper acclimation for saltwater on that one. Last biggie from the checkout - yes we guarentee all our fish for 15 days. (Unfortunately not saltwater) I told the customer about this site and hope that they come here seeing as how much I've learned here. Thanks to all and specially the sharks for the help here!

There is no right way or wrong way to acclamate any fish. So unless you have a docteret in aquaitics, Which there is no such thing, Stop giving infromation to people as an expret. I dump my fish into a tank with out floating them ever. And The clek's mistake at ***** is *****'s problem not yours. So Unless you want this site shut down stop putting up posting about other companies.

Hmmmmmmm......I've seen some strange practices at the one and only ***** I've ever been in....all I can say is personally I will not consider adding any of their marine livestock to my systems........as far as acclamating fish.....if I ever add a fish to either of my tanks it will spend an extended stay in a q tank prior to ever going in a display(virtually all of my fish have been in Q for approximately 6 weeks) ... and I always acclamate slowly(I prefer to drip over 2-4 hours) anything to reduce stress and avoid sudden changes can only be beneficial...but then to each their own I suppose........by the way...no I don't claim to have a docterate in marine aquatics either....just like to play it safe and take as few risks as possible(helps to avoid major problems).....*_^

Disgruntled ***** worker??????????? I think that statement was way off.. How about we take you, and say you live in 90 degree weather and the air is good and so forth. Now we just pick you up and dump you at the north pole. No remember you didnt have time to get more clothes or even adjust to the weather change it was just BOOM -50 F ... Tell me how that would be????

Kinda makes you wonder a couple things: 1) as you all said, ***** worker? 2) How frequently does this person buy fish and/or treat what they have for diseases and parasites. 3) Why is he/she here?
Personally, I love this board! As far as posting negative information about ***** or any other business, there is the freedom of information act out there. Most of us that have posted about ***** are posting ACTUAL experiences. This is not slamming or anything close. Just sharing information to help others avoid making mistakes that we may have made.
Every good book I have read about Saltwater or freshwater tanks reccomends acclimating fish! I am not sure where this person is coming from.
I applaud you for trying to help a new hobbiest!
Good luck and happy reefing!

Ren, we all appreciate your post and hope you will continue to post your fishy thoughts, whatever they are, on this board (unless you start bashing people for no good reason).

That was the most outrageous statement I have heard since joining this BB. Just dumping new fish into the tank without even an attempt to match temp? I would definately like to hear how many losses you have had? It's guys like you that keep promote *****'s incompetence.
Definately not a ***** fan, but must confess I found one that is acceptable. There is a ***** in Roseville, Minnesota that actually has a competent staff that knows their stuff. They have good quality fish with no signs of ick in any of their tanks. They just need to thin out the tanks a bit(too many in the same tank).
As a ***** basher, I will also give some credit to the ones that actually attempt to put out a quality product. This is the only one I have been to in Minnesota that is acceptable ;) .

Just a bit of sharing, the other day I returned my damsel, and my lfs did the same thing, just dumped it in the tank. I guess he doesn't value damsel as much as he values angelfishes. One thing though, damselfish has the reputation as one of the hardiest fish, and if it can withstand the ammo spike or nitrite spike, a little temp spike shouldn't be a problem, right? I know that's not entirely true, but *****'s tank supposedly has tolerable temperature difference to our tank at home, and it wouldn've killed the fish.
It's just another way of seeing the problem :) . I, myself, is not a ***** lover, my shrimp died because my heater, which I got from *****, malfunctioned, and boiled my cleaner shrimp :( . It still hurt when I think about it :D .

Roseville ***** update. I visited the Roseville ***** that I bragged up and am embarrased to say I was suckered. Today the tanks have dead fish all over the place with ick rinning wild.
Once again I am still trying to find a ***** that is up to par.

Wow!
He just dumps them in his tank. I used to only put them in a 5 gal bucket and slowly drip the water in from the tank but now i've gone to a QT since ick killed all but one. Actully that one is in the 5g bucket right now getting ready to go back into the tank. I can imagine what is in the water that the fish are in at the store. I'm not saying it is always bad but how do you know and why risk putting it in your tank

Coraltrapper,
So do you just dump the water in too?!?!? Maybe you should spend more time on this board learning things.
I too was at the Roseville ***** today. I had never been there before so it was a new experience. The tanks were infested with ick and there were lots of dead fish. The woman working seemed to know a little bit. I saw her sell a Manderin Goby to a women that had just set up a new tank with a few pounds of live rock. She told her they were very easy to care for. I will probably stop there again to check them out.

davenport *****:
sold a hippo tang to a kid that told them he wanted a colorful fish for a 5 gallon tank he got. i dont know how anyone in the world could be that stupid. all the fish "catcher" had to do was read the label describing the fish. i doubt the kid was even doing saltwater. add another casualty to deathco's infinite list. :(

Lots of bad things can happen when people don't know better or don't care. Makes you realize that ignorance is truely bliss. Gee, maybe I'd be happier if I just stopped reading these posts... :)

um in case anyone didn't notice; that post by coraltrapper, it looked like it was written by a prankster that was using his computer to play w/;
coral trapper supposedly is married to regional ***** rep;he posted a non flaming remark for the last ***** thread that was started;we just float the bag for period of time, then release; 1/2 the fish we have in the 135 are from ***** acually anywhere from 3 months-5 months in the tank now;usually we watch the fish for period of time before deciding to take home; if it can survive a ***** stay for 2 weeks or more, shoul automaticall be called hardy

Being a novice myself....I would GREATLY appreciate an experienced saltwater hobbyist to correct a Pet Co. employee in my presence. I think most of the Pet Co. people here are just thinking..."buy the damn fish and let me go back to sitting down and reading my Vogue magazine". Unlike the CopperTrapper guy...anyone who helped me out at a LFS would gain my sincere appreciation. Oh, and CopperTrapper?? Instead of bashing those who try to help us "newbies", maybe you should focus your attention on spelling lessons ;)

Wow did I upset someone? Guess he might have been corrected by a customer at some time huh? But all flames aside I do shop at ***** hince why I was there. Lessons learned from this site and the people here have helped me greatly and was simply passing that on. I have a coral beauty purchased from ***** currently in Q. So far so good with him however we bought some freshwater fishies for my sons tank and they all died with ick (while undergoing treatment too). I would LOVE to see you, coraltrapper, attempt to argue that there is no acclimation for fish with a few of the sharks here haha I think they'd eat ya up buddy. Now, if we are ALL wrong and misinformed over acclimating please do show me the site or pass on the book that says this?? If I sat outside my local ***** with a sign saying how bad thier practices were ya think they could do anything to stop me? Read the constitution.

i see there is a lot of bashing of ***** here on this board. i myself was not a very big fan of *****. i am now a ***** employee and have been for several years. i am the supervisor of the fish room and have been in the business for several years. i have owned my own store specializing in saltwater and reef tanks. When i started at this ***** it was in very very bad shape. But i have taken this stores fish room to one of the best here in the pacific northwest. I have over 10 years experience in the saltwater fieds and am currently running an aquarium maintenance business. i have an excellent clientel that comes from all over western washington. i am not saying that every ***** is good.we do have bad weeks with shipping. There are several that make me cringe. but there are several ma and pop shops that should not be in business. There are a few in this town that shouldn't. I myself will not sell a fish if it is not properly set up for especially saltwater. My minimum requirements for any new comer to saltwater is a 50 gallon. Hope this helps.I just wanted to give my 2 cents worth. Hope everyone understands where i am coming from as i do with you.

Amen, I'm not saying each and every one is bad its just that they are chain ... ya know. Naming the local mom n pops does nothing as nobody here whould reconize them. So LFS applies to them haha and I have to say that here there isn't but 1 decent shop and he mainly does speciality tanks and has his 'shop' in his backyard. He Quarentine's all his fish and ensures they are eating before he'll let them leave and wants to know every detail of thier new home. :)
