ren, thanks for the reccommendation, and thanks for setting the poor guy straight, the fish will appreciate it
Coraltrapper,
thank youfor reminding us who exactly keeps our lfs's in business, they would loose alot of business if everyone kept their fishes for decades
tehre are 2 very good reasons that i can think of not to use that practice, and one has not even been mentioned, 1st is the shock, from drastic swings in water quality(ph alk amm SALINITY and trites/trates, not only temp)
and 2d, what if you take this fish home and do this and it happens that they had a disease in the tank?? wher is it now?? or say they treated a fish for some disease adn used a med you don't want like copppper, again, where is it now?? there goes you big 16 inch 150$ clam(and all others)
we all MUST slowly acclimate AND quarentine, it is not only a practice we boast, it is a responsibility we MUST practice, remember we are adopting these beautiful creatures and it is our duty to care for not risk them

oh, shoooooooot trigger fool, i mus tbe going, my spelling has to be the worst on lthe board, LOL

I'm calm, I can't spell, and I don't float fish.
I lost 6 salt fish ever in my keeping of fish. 1 damsel becuase I dropped a rock on it, a flag Angel that was given to me, 2 dragonet gobies both given to me half starved, and scooter blenny because I removed the silica sand bed and repaledwith live sand. And a sand sifting gobie I don't know way he died. Now I have killed a lot of corals because I'm not totally sure what I'm doing. That why i vist the post to read advice, not how bad a company is. And this post is owened by another company so bashing ***** is wrong on this site. Just stick to giving help tp people not BASHING people or other companies.

Well gee Coral what do you think I was doing? Helping. I neglected to post what they sold this person for a substrate - regular aquarium gravel. Case closed?

I don't know about your LFS but they have a hard time keeping good help at ours. Let the buyer beware....you have no idea the knowledge or exprience level of these folks unless you ask. I visited a LFS in a large neighboring city last weekend...they had about 100 tanks set up SW...and atleast 1 dead fish in about 50 of them, needless to say, I didn't purchase anything. They weren't good picker uppers. I am new at this hobby, but wasn't born yesterday. Some common sense has to be used. We all will make mistakes, they just cost more in SW aquariums.

well, sorry coralT, honestly thought someone had comandeered your comp; ghuess I was wrong; if you do not like a particular song being played on the radio, you change the station; if you do not like a particular show on TV, you change the channel; if you do not like somehing being posted on SPECIFIC topic that you CLAIM does not interest you, well, you DON'T READ IT...I think that is simple enough; besides, that type of information is informative to people (newbies & the seasoned alike) concerning a local ***** on whether it's a poor business or that it has at least 1 knowledgable person there;
ALSO, SWF.com is intelligible enough to have the usual disclaimer posted about not being responsible for content of post made or reliability of the content
makes it pretty legal that way as it is not specifically them or a company representative slandering another business making the negative post(s)

I wonder if Coraltrapper5020 29 reef tank is an empty tank with a coral paper background....hmm.
Anyway there is a ***** not far from me that is not to be trusted. I have heard this "non acclimation" bit also, but knew better from my day's as a freshwater keeper. When I asked him about a decent filter, like a wet/dry, he recommended a ugf and powerheads. I laughed and left. :D

Our huge LFS up here is called Petland. Not to slander, but they are talking about shutting down their SW department, for good reason. Tons of disease, high mortality rates, etc. Once they had an employee switch a pipe and flush the entire section with fresh water -- wiped it out. Since their second attempt, it has all gone downhill as well. I hope to scoop up some awesome deals, though, when they liquidate... ;)

I love my local *****. The employees there are stupid as hell. I bought a brand new eclipse III from them for free. They had it on a 20 gallon tank priced just for the tank. I only paid 40 dollars for the whole thing. I cant help that they have stupid employees. There is honestly no way that I would buy a fish from them. I have other animals that I research on the net and ***** even gets slammed on different sights.

As may statments were true to my self, I posted these to get a felling of knowledge on this bb. I got the reactions that I was expecting. Some good some bad. Like jwtrojan44 said as hobbiest we control what is carried in a store and what conditions we accept. You that go back to the "bad petcos" day by day to see how bad they are try giving advice to the sales person on what they are doing wrong. It cost maybe 30 min of you time to get better fish for you to buy.

yes fishoutofwater is the person I go to for most of my reef help. He also works for my wife and I work with his wife. You have my point. 32 hits on this tread with no ones point the same, but i still can spell very well, Yes you all my bash me for that.

I agree with the ***** bashing on their livestock, but they are the only chain that carries saltwater products in KC and their chemicals run $4-$5 cheaper than at my many LFS's. I try to buy everything at my favorite LFS to ensure he stays in business, but if my money is low, I run to *****. Hmmm... That could be their new catch phrase. :p

Looking for fishoutofwater!!! I myself live in Olympia Wa and am contemplating the ***** ordeal. I've seen bad things in your store just a couple weeks ago such as a yellow tang with no eye floating and being pecked on while two employees left it there, no other customers. I've seen beautiful fish as well! If you know what you're talking about, would you give your first name so I know who to deal with? I understand keeping privacy but I would find this important to feel confident in my buying. Thanks.

Hey, I resent that. I work for fed ex and we don't throw our boxes or stand on them. We jump on them and stomp them. Just kidding! As an employee I make sure that every pkg I handle is with care, especially if filled with livestock. If i were you I'd call the local fed ex office and complain to the management. That way the guys that are mistreating the boxes are reprimanded. As far as the original post I have a local petland that is just as bad but I don't think it's their fault. They only have one saltwater specialist and if he's out then you're stuck with bad advice. As a consumer you just have to use common sense when dealing with these stores and do some research before going in and actually purchasing anything. When i buy a fish from them I'll watch the tanks for about 30 minutes to check for disease, activity of fish, etc. I do think these boards are extremely helpful to the novice by becoming better consumers and hopefully ***** will take notice and start improving their quality.

fab-71 - we have called fed ex and we have complained newmerous times. i have been bitching , talking pictures etc for almost 2 years now. i personally saw our fedex driver stepping on the boxes and throwing them out of the truck. I HAD A NICE LITTLE TALK WITH THE GENTLEMEN and he seemed to understand. but i get atleast 2 boxes out of 15-20 that have foot prints on them. I have seen them in the trucks upside down on there sides and also have had them come in a totally different box due to being destroyed along the way. This is a major problem here in the pacific northwest that seems to not be getting better. Just this last friday our shipment came in after 5pm. They are supposed to be here no later than 4pm. needless to say we lost the entire order. 6 cases of fish and 4 of them were saltwater. the only fish that survived were 2 powderbrown tangs, 1 powder blue tang and xlg snowflake eel. the bag temps on these we 51 degrees. The tangs survived but were covered with ich the next day. we freshwater dipped them 4-5 times and now as of wednesday they are doing great. eating and very active. This is a very upsetting problem. Where does the fault lie. We are not allowed to refuse any livestock order. So we are stuck with the problem and have to fix it at store level. This is, in my opinion, where alot of the stores get a bad rap. If you were to go to a distibutor and see the amount of loss they have would you bitch and complain as much as you do about any of these other big chains? I am sorry but nobodys perfect. When i had my own private fish store i had bad orders but few and far between. usually during the winter. I also went to the airport and picked them up myself. they were direct flights. The problem with fed ex is that they dont direct flight unless its priority over night if am correct. So the fish are sent from california to the central hub in tennisee and then sorted and sent back to washington state. hmmm, lots of travel time and room for damage. Big difference between dropped at airport and sent directly to washington state. any how sorry for such a long message. that just my thought.

That is bad. It's unbelievable that after complaining there is still mistreatment of your shipments and boxes. The problem probably is also at the local management level if that's the case. All of our packages are sorted at the main hub with the exception of 3 day service. If you are receiving the boxes economy 2day the commitment time is 5 oclock. I can understand why you'd be upset. Just today I received a 30lb delivery of live rock from dhl. When he got upstairs to my apt he just dropped it on the floor with a bang. That was when I thought of your posting. I hope your future shipments are better handled. I know I would be ticked off if I was having problems with my carriers.
