long purple algea

i have this purple algea that is gets long and stringy. Just wondering what causes it and what i can use to get rid of it. I have to keep pulling it out around my shrooms. if not it will take over them. It also grows on my sand like a layer of grass. thanks mike

Sounds like cyanobacteria.
Do a search here and see if the numerous descriptions that others have supplied sounds familiar. There have also been some pics posted.
Personally I use Chemi-Chean without any ill effects to my reef.
