what size is your tank, and what is that brown coral with glowing tips under your clown? I like it.

14 gallon tank and yes, the coral you pointed out is the elegance. It's the clowns home. As soon as the lights turn off he darts into it and does not swim again until the lights come on! It's crazy!

It took me 45 minutes to get this shot!!! Look closely! He NEVER comes out unless it's feeding time. So I kept opening the feeding lid. He would come out, and then I would snap a pic, but I took 50 bad ones until I caught him!!!

This guy's name is Hairball. He was rescued from a DeathCo tank. When I came across him, he had 3 inches on hair algae growing off of him. He was the only thing alive in his tank. He was quarantined for about a month until I felt safe adding him to this system.

Hey Fishstick -
That's a hairy mushroom! He is so cool! Much cooler than most hairy mushrooms you will find. Although, I use actinics at 3 to 1 (27 watt actinic vs 9 watt 13,000K daylight) so the blue hue may be a bit exaggerated; the coral is more purple than blue.
In my experience, a clown will host an elegance, a hairy mushroom,
and a hammer. However, it is my understanding that
they can and will host many different types of corals.
I bought the hammer in hopes that it would be
my clown's home, but instead he took a liking to the
hairy shroom.
Almost any fleshy, non-branching coral will be a candidate.
Also, I believe (and this is just my experience,
not a scientific fact) that a coral that eats
solid food is a more likely candidate than a
solely photosynthetic coral. When i feed my tanks, my clowns
grab the shrimp and often spit or drop the food
to the host coral. I really believe this is the only reason my clown is allowed to host the elegance, considering the elegance ate a yellow watchman prior to the little clown making it his home!
The mutual benefit of the clown feeding the elegance and the elegance offering the clown a home is what (I believe) it all comes down to...
