Longest running tank?

Who on here has had a tank running for a real long time without crashing and killing the entire system. I have a 75G currently that has been running since 11/02 and I have not lost one occupant (knock on wood). I really would like to be able to keep this tank going for years to come. I see how people spend a ton of money on fish instead of equipment, kill off their entire tank and get frustrated and get out of the hobby. I am looking for some good long term advice from people that have done it.
Right now I am thinking:
1) watch the fish loading carefully, don't overfill with fish
2) if in doubt on the health of a fish at the LFS don't buy it
3) routine checks on water quality
4) routine water changes
5) always rinse hands before placing in tank (dilution of pollution)
6) sump/refugium and protein skimmer for cleansing
7) knowledge beats throwing cash at the problem (thanks SWF)
