I add 1 gal of freshwater pretty much everyday, due to evaporation, and do at least a 5 gal water change every sunday!in my 55

Water replentishment from evaporation is not considered a water change. This does nothing for the quality of your water. You need to do salt water changes on a regular basis for the benefit of trace minerals replentishment and overall water quality. It will remove building nitrates as well.

The basic idea behind regular water changes is very simple to me...the idea is to dilute pollution via dilution....and each water change will replenish trace elements. Just makes sense to me to remove and replace a small percentage of the system water on a regular basis. Top off is much different and is basically to maintain the established water volume and salinity level.

I use to do a 10% every week. Now I do a 25% every three week should I go back to the weekly deal in your opinion NM Reef. Thanks for the reply

It depends on what you have in your tank. If it's fish only 25% every three weeks is probably okay. If your keeping softies, corals, inverts, etc., you should do a % at least every week.
