Pretty rare and hard to find. Originally pigs were trained to scent them out since they grow underground but recently they have started training dogs to find them since pigs will tend to eat them.

Truffles grow only in the fall and winter, and only in a very few regions where temperatures and rainfall are just right. For black truffles, the growing season runs from November to March; they're hard to find; despite many years of effort, no one has been able to cultivate them artificially.

no I didnt buy them myself. it was the first time that I have ever held some in my hand. we had them at the restaurant where I work because we had a company buy out the place for a party.
