i bought some reefbones at one point -- dry dead coral rock. it worked fine but for some reason the lfs's don't sell it and if you buy it online you've gotta pay shipping -- which defeats some of the point of getting the cheap rock in the first place! if you google "reef bones" it'll come up at a few outlets, although this site doesn't sell 'em.
As long as you're not in a hurry to introduce a bunch of livestock, which you shouldn't do anyway, I find the coralline spread fairly quickly (i.e., months, not years) to the non-live rock.

I did a google search for base rock and the first site I found was great. Custom ordered 70lbs of hand picked rock with pictures e-mailed prior to shipping. E-mail me if you have questions...

Make your own! I am! 1 part Portland Type I/II cement, 4-5 parts oyster shells, and water. I'll post some pics later this afternoon if you wish (can't now for I'm at work). It's easy to do... just make sure you cure it for just over a month in fresh water.

I did the same thing, I bought about 25-28lbs. of live figi rock, then went back to the lfs & bought what they called lace rock that was dry base rock for 1.50-3.00 a lb. After I let it sit in a tank for a couple of days by itself (the baserock) I was ablr to scrape off some dead debris, now there is actually coralline algae starting to grow back on it. If I had known that in the beginning I think I would have bought mostly the base rock, it would have taken a little longer to get it looking good but been alot cheaper!
