if you just want to keep zoos and shrooms PC's will do the job. not very powerful though. im sure you'll get bit by the coral bug and want to add more in the future, in which case you'll need something better.
I would go with the 48" Nova Extreme Pro 6-bulb. Its around $350 new. But then your all set for just about anything in the future. I've found the hard way in this hobby to just bite the bullet and get the best stuff you can, it will save you in the long run.
I have a Coralife 48" 260 watt PC im looking to sell for pretty cheap.
PM if you might be interested.

Maybe you aren't looking for a used light, but - I have a
48" Aqualight Pro, 2x 150W HQI + 2x 96W Actinic + 3 Blue Moonlight LEDs.
bulbs are 6 months old - perfect condition.
shoot me an email if interested -I use this on my 90 now. I'm giving up saltwater for fresh for a few years.
I live in Plainfield, Illinois - close to you.

Icecap 660 Ballast, endcaps, and t5 bulbs. This would work great if your dad has a canopy over his tank, if not you will have to spend the extra money and get a fixture.

he dosent have a canopy and i dont really think he wasnts one. i am really looking at getting him a new one just because it will be a christmas gift and i wont have to worry to much about the light not working and such. i am gonna have to give this some thought to figure out what i should get him.
thank you

how would i know how many watts it is?
i would really like to buy new not a used one.
your basically adding all bulb wattage together. 4 bulbs at 96w x 4 =384w add MH 2x 150=300w totaling 684 w.
if your going to go with new I'd go with 250 HQI mh then you can keep almost anything.... do alot of price comparing before ordering for warrentee etc.. if going auction sites for purchasing one be forewarned these may be refurbished not new .but good new lighting isnt cheep but you will get what you pay for

the nova extreme pro will allow you to keep anything also. and 250 watt halides will allow you to keep ANYTHING. no limitations.
for zoos and shrooms, go with the nova extreme 4 x 54. it will do the job for you.

The 432 total consists of 4 white bulbs and 4 blue bulbs
(daylights and actinics) these 8 bulbs together are 432 watts.
54 watts each. This does not include the moon/lunar lights.
It has 3 or 4 of those. Has 3 plugs for each set of lights.
The 4 fans turn on with the white lights to reduce heating issues.

refurbished means it broke in the shop, or on the customer, they took it back and fixed it, and now they offer the same warranty with it. you can't lose.

this is the one i think. unless its not strong enough. he wants a bunch of zoa's and 1 shroom. so i would assume that this would work just fine
