bearded dragon, ball python, chinchilla?
I have a chinchilla. They are cuddly little things. He's never bit me yet. Only thing is, he doesn't like to lay still; he's always trying to jump off the bed and run around the room. Cute though.

Indeed if you can find a baby ferret and get it to be tame, and not by it from petsmart. They are the coolest little guys ever.

how about a skunk? de-scented....
I had a friend years ago told me this story about a friend of his had one. Mind you i'm not sure if the story is ture or not. Anyway, they had him de-scented(if thats possible). He said it was a cool pet, when he would get angry he would turn around and try and spray but couldn't....so he would get even more pissed cause he couldn't spray. i thought it was funny that someone would have one as a pet, like stated i'm not sure if he was just pulling my chain or not. sorry, lol, was the first thing that poped in my mind.

A pet skunk is quite possible, although I don't know how that'd work out in NY.
I had one, when I was kid, that had the scent glands removed. A friend of my dads gave it to us. It was trained to use the litter box...he was the coolest!
I also, at one time, had a pet Opossum and a pet Raccoon.

ok, so it is possible. he told me about it, and i was unsure and never really looked into it.
i'd like to walk one into petsmart on a leash, bet that would be fun, lol.

Well I can't get a skunk my mom said I could get a pet but I dont think she will let me get one of those. Sugar gliders and hedgehogs and a couple more animals(possums) are now illegal in Ny buy a law made like 2 years ago.
I'mthinking of a ferret or a bird . But Im allergic to ferrets but maybe I can get a heavy duty allergy medicine?

rats actually make excellent pets and thay arent as smelly as ferrets. very social pets.
sugar gliders are high maintinence.
ferrets are fun pets but even descented their urine really smells bad unless you buy BI-odor and add it to their water daily (bi-odor is really expensive) And I dont think your mom wants you to have a smelly destructive very inquisitive animal.
leopard geckos are very handleable if your interested in reptiles.
crested geckos are even easier to maintain (I'm almost positive Cresteds are legal in new york)
chinese water dragons are cool but they are higher maintinence and get large.
I could go on for days on the pros and cons of each pet type. how about you narrow it down to a few things you are interested in and I could make observations on the care and requirments (and If I dont know how to care for the listed animal I know I can find the info you need) I probably already own one.......

Ferrets arent bad if you brush them regularly, dont know if they are in the same family of Weasels as Mongooses but are great pets and can be house broken.

I vote sugar glider. I just got one for the wife and it almost causes physical pain looking at its cuteness. Maint is nothing compared to the reef, so I guess I might be underestimating it but like I said just cute to the core.
It has gotten this bad. Our sugar glider now has a Coach collar. Completly spoiled.
Social little critters. Gets along great with the dogs. They sit and watch the cage and she will actually feed the dogs little honey sticks and misc veggies through the bars.
