So I'm setting up what I hope to be a nice little 40 gal community tank and and my girlfriend says that I need "a nice red fish" so does anyone have any suggestions? The current stock list is:
2 false perculas
1 royal gramma
2 3 strip damsels
1 lawnmower blenny
20 mixed hermits
15 mixed snails
5 peppermint shrimp
1 cleaner shrimp

Hiya,
What you've listed is enough fish for that size tank. Now, if you haven't put them in yet, I'd look at a flame hawk and ditch the damsels.

Flame hawk would eat the shrimp.
I would also agree that a fairy wrasse would look phenomenal in there. The Ruby fairy wrasse, as well as the flame fairy wrasse are both a gorgeous red color (especially the latter).

Never thought of an angel, tarball. Good suggestion. I just assumed it was a reef tank - but you are right. This would be the perfect tank for a flame.

They don't need a huge tank at all. They are a perching fish and cannot physically swim much because of the lack of a swim bladder. A 29 or 30 gallon would seem like plenty for a flame hawk.

The only issue might be the cleaner shrimp - although, so many fish know not to bother the cleaner shrimp because they serve a useful purpose. And the flame is one of the more peaceful hawks anyway.
I would say yes, but just be careful with the cleaner.
