Looking for some ideas.

I just inherited another tank. This one is a 125 to go with my 150.
The 125 had a purple tang and a 14" starts and stripes puffer in it. The tang looked stressed to me so I put him in my 150 before I moved the tank and he looks much better. Now the puffer is being babysat by a friend of mine that owns the LFS I go to. Till the tank is in place and is stable.
My question is, what the heck do I put in with a puffer over a foot in length....ideas. I was thinking a shark, but they are so boring.

A trigger of fairly large size ?

a clown trigger of any size would probably work. well at least he wouldnt be picked on.

Good to see you out of the "Aquarium" forum Darth....Hell, I didn't even know you had fish.

Anyway, I don't find the big puffers to be terribly aggressive toward other fish, unless they view the fish as food, i.e. nothing small. Of course I have never had a 14 incher (What a monster!!). But I agree, Triggers and Puffers make great tank mates, a medium sized Clown would do nicely with him, that would be a sweet tank. If it is has a good lid on it, get a Fimbriated Eel.

Yeah, I have had fish for years. Been on this forum for a longtime. had 3 name changes so my post count doesn't reflect that much..lol
Usually I just run searches if I need info and have been burnt out answering the same questions in some of these forums...lol. so I keep pretty quiet in the rest of the forums lately.
But I am just having a mind blank of what to have with him. There was a footlong Volitan Lion fish bigger than the puffer as well...but he died as they let the tank go before I could get him out of it.
I was thinking the eel Idea...or a Trigger, but wanted to see if anyone else could through out an idea I hadn't thought of.
I keep tossing around getting a big Mappa Puffer with him, but not sure if I want to sink in 500 dollars on one fish at this point.

Not to be daft, but you're planning on putting that puffer back into the 125? At 14", did you see the puffer in the tank beforehand? With only 4" of room, that thing must have to strategize how to turn around.
That said, a 'big' wrasse would be another idea, Sunset/Banana, Goldbar, Lunare, Tusk. I probably would do one of those and a trigger.

No, I see where the concern is. I saw him in there before. He had room to turn around, but I also changed the live rock landscape to give him a bit more room as well. I am only looking to add one fish with him.

I think the wrasse would be a good choice then, as they'd give the tank some 'activity.' Or maybe a trigger and try out a small school of chromis/damsels. I think you could find them large enough not to get eaten.

I would have to respectfully disagree on the chromis/damsels AK, when I moved from Charleston I gave my 7 inch porky to a friend, he ate 4 damsels in 5 mins, he saved #5 for a snack later, I know CCampbell's puffer of similar size ate a school of Chromis. Darth's monster would devour small fish i'm afraid.

I remember your post kjr, and here's why I suggested that; I think Arothron's on a whole seems to be 'calmer' then Diodon's in regards to other fish. There was a video on youtube about a porky taking a chunk out of yellow tang. There are also countless aroth's in community tanks with smaller fish like clowns. Of course, most of those are dogfaces, which are puppies, and a S&S is definitely more bold, so I dunno. Fails back onto the 'every fish is an individual' line...

Valid point...I sure can't argue as I have not actually had an Aronthron, I would love to do one in this tank, but my wife and 2 1/2 year old love the porky

I like the idea of an eel or a trigger. You couldn't go wrong with another puffer. Or a nice size angel should do OK. Large garibaldi damsel would add some nice color.
If it were me I'd probably do a clown trigger or clown tang and a good size harlequin tusk.

Domino Damsels!! They are great...follow the puffer around and eat all the little bits of food the puffer spits out when sifting...I have a domino, porc puffer, and a picasso trigger (that is going to be moved shortly) in with mine. If I had to chose one tank mate though, it would be the damsel
