I have an 85 gal fo tank with sand bottom, large piece of dead coral and fake plants. It has been setup for a little over a year. In the begining everything was clean looking and now algae is growing on everything, the coral was white and is now brown, green, red, also the fake plants have the same. In the last couple of weeks I noticed small white tube like things growing on everything, what are they? All my levels are fine, I have a protein skimmer, and uv steralizer (sp). Has anyone ever had this and what do I do to get rid of it. Also can I take out the fake plants and wash them and put them back, or will that disrupt my balance in the water, do I do one or two plants at a time or buy new ones. Any help would be greatly apperciated.

Im new to this hobby but experienced the same thing with my CC and decorative coral FO setup. It was caused by high Nitrates and phosphates. I started doing regular water changes with de-nitrated water (nitragon filter) and used phosphate and Nitrate sponges (Hagen Green-X)in the sump.
Several times I took all the decorative coral out of the tank and scrubbed them.
After several weeks the algae stopped growing. I only had one Clown fish at the time and it was fine. My aggresive actions with the coral caused no signs of Amm or Ni in the water, but I do have a mature trickel filter.

ok so whats a mini tube worm? are they bad, will they become a problem, how do you get rid of them? will a clean up crew do it? I don't have any but i thought i would buy about 30 hermit crabs and 25 snails. is that they correct amount for my size tank?
thanks gen :)

Thanks, I also went to my lfs and he told me the same thing that they were harmless. I got worried that they might cause a problem. A saltwater tank is the LAST place I need a problem.
Thanks again gen :)
