Some things the movie left out and/or were different from the book.
There were no elves at Helms Deep. The whole point was it was men, and men alone that faced Saurumans hoards. No last alliance. It was just the strength of men.
The elves fought in their own lands, Mirkwood, LothLorien, etc. and did not assist at Helms Deep or in Gondor. Legolas and Arwen's brothers were the only Elves to fight with men.
There were other Princes and Kings that came to the aid of Gondor, it wasn't just Rohan and Gondor.
Strider faced Sauron in the Planitir and showed him the sword to frighten Sauron into hasty action and show himself as the heir of Isildur and King. This and Pippens looking into the Planitir led Sauron to believe the Ring was at Minas Tirith and that Aaragorn would use the Ring against him.
The Dwarves fought in the own lands (mountains) as well. Dain (Thorins cousin that took over as King at the end of the Hobbit) sent Gimli to Rivendale because Sauron was threatening the Dwarves with war if they wouldn't give up Bilbo and his whereabouts - Sauron offered them the missing Dwarvish rings in trade).
Gandolf, Elrond and Galadriel had the 3 elvish rings. When the One Ring, Saurons Master Ring was destroyed, so was the magic of the other rings. This is another reason the elves were leaving.
Farimir and Eowyn fall in love and rebuild Ithilien (Where he finds Frodo and Sam in The Two Towers) and live happily ever after.
Farimir never once, not even a little, ever had any desire whatsoever for the ring. The movie painted him as being drawn to it and finally overcoming, and I think this worked overall, but he was a much nobler character in the book.
Denethor died holding a Planitir in the midst of the fire.
Sauroman and WormTongue mess up the Shire and the hobbits have to fix things. WormTongue kills Sauraman.
