I've never let anything beat me before in the hobby.
But I officially say I have given on on this particualr battle...
The algae has won

I bow to the 1 cell organisms....
My 45 Corner Pentagon looks like the african rain forest.
Algae so thick, my mag float is trying to jump out of the tank.
I have no hope but to disassemble this tank and start over....I've been through bad algae blooms before...This is the mother of all algae blooms. I wish my lawn was this thick!!
I'm not even going to ask for help as 20 lawnmower blennies couldn't save me.
me 0 algae 1

if this has happened before, something must be causing this in your hobby, just curious is the tank in direct sunlight?? i mean that magnitude of algae is a reoccuring problem, its gotta be something in your tank.. you sound like an experienced if you have a 300 gal in the wall ( well id hope so anyway with a tank that size) dude you have to know whats causing this...im thinkin direct sunlight but that may be just too easy

No this hasen't happened before. Algae blooms yes...but nothing like this...
I added some liverock which had a certain type of algae that just won't give up...
And being that it's in direct sunlight...this stuff grows outta control.
I added a maroon clown that dug up my sand bed which made the nitrates skyrocket..
DSB are good if not distrubed to much...
The clown dug down to the glass bottom!
So nitrates + Sunlight = Awsome fuge lol!!

sorry to double post......but i had a yellow tang the size of king kong and he kept "sliding into home" and kicking up the substrate made a huge trench by the glass and my nitrates went psycho! so needless i traded him for a much smaller one and now my substrate is great.."phewww" but yeah then i had algae blooms not as severe but close. but i WON!! lol anyway water changes and turned down light cycle by half for a week and it killed it nicely

You don't want to see it....I had a wad of alage the size of a base Ball!!! I had to take it out with the net..
When i scooped it up the handle on the net was bending down it was that heavy...
My powerhead was not even distunguishable...
Everything has been removed from the tank and put into a roughneck tote with a cover and my powerhead that you dont know is a powerhead.
That will stay in there for like a week or 2 until it's all dead....
So far the longest piece was almost a foot long!!!
And the worst part is i got a mouth full of water...
Almost lost my lunch.....

I have had my tank up for 13 months now. for the first 7 or 8 months, I had hair algae that bad. I bought a large piece of rock with hair algae on it because I thought that was something desirable, lol. it spread like wildfire. after picking and picking and picking, I finally started to beat it. then, when it was almost gone, the slime algae explodes. now I have almost no hair algae, but PLENTY of slime. I can't win for damn algae. when I set my next tank up, it's going to be unlit and probably covered with a sheet for the first 2 months.

I bowrrowed this from premuem aquticts web page. i bought 15 of these snails and put them in my 29 gal tank had lots of green alage on the back glass and live rocks power heads as well. I don't have much of the alage left one peace of dead coral you buy for decor is the only thing still covered I though about taking it out and scrubing it but then what would these snails eat once they finish with everything else. Buy em youll love em
Margarites pupillius: A small coralline encrusted snail from Baja, Mexico, which has a great appetite for algae. This smaller snail has a rounded shell, with size similar to an Astrea. They stay small, so a great micro-tank addition or use larger numbers for bigger tanks. They eat diatom and film type algaes and really help on the glass. Recommend 1 per 2 gallons, up to 1 to 1 for major algae problems.

5 Slow but thorough 10/27/2004 - by Joseph Horgan from Olathe, KS US
If you would like your live rock to look as though it had just been cleaned with a fine toothbrush, this is the snail for you. Everything they "touch" glows, especially coralline algaes. THey are especially thorough in consuming/removing diatoms.

These are some hungry snails! Mine seem to be eating everything they come across, except for larger macro algaes. They seem to be a bit dumber than other snails -- getting stuck in corners, upside down, etc... Not as bad as astreas in that regard though.

These are some of the coolest snails I have. They're pretty fast and cruise the glass quite a bit. They look like they eat green algae, some slime, and maybe diatoms just judging from the feeding tracks they leav behind. I'll be getting more of these guys.

Unless those snail were the size of my fist they ain't gonna do anything in my tank..I could probably use some cattle to graze on it...
Or i should freeze dry it and sell it to a store lol.
Thanks though..
