Low Canopy for a MH

Anyone here use a low canopy with a MH light in it? Did you get any heat problems with it just wondering?

I'd be worried more about water splashing on the bulb then heat....How low are you talking about?

you'll need 4" just to be able to mount the bulbs flush. Maybe I should say that when using mogul sockets along with a reflector you need about 4" just to mount em flush.

I run a pair of 65K Iwasakis over a 220 reef for a customer of mine...after installation they are about 5" above the water surface. I don't think I'd try to have them any closer due to potential for splash(and I worry about them enough the way it is). There really hasn't been any heat issues to speak of...the temp ranges from 78-82 on a consistent basis. But thats over a 220 display...I'd think on a smaller system with less water volume there would be more potential for heat issues. This display also runs 3x140 watt VHO's...and as mentioned heat isn't a issue.

Well I think I can fit it to the canopy but it will be 3 or 4 inches away from the water surface but I do have a glass shield over it. My tank is 100 gal so I just wanna make sure it won't heat the water really quickly. If not I can go with HQI or just remodel the canopy.

you'll have the same problem with HQI's........... The bulbs will be sitting right on top of the glass so heat will be a factor..It might even crack the glass.

well I want to have a lid on it so it will look much nicer. I'm planning to go with 250 watt so I think I need a much higher canopy for that.
