low lighting corals

What type of corals could live under a 40 watt NO bulb temporarily? Could mushrooms or polyps survive? Or is it best to upgrade the lighting?

It's always best to upgrade Lighting if you want any type of coral. If it is affordable and what you want. I think fish only set ups look better with higher than no lighting.

i agree i would up you lighting. But you could get away for a little while with a few mushroom like the red ones. I hade them in a tank by them self running a double flourescent light strip and they did real well and propagated like wild fire but have done so much better when I put them in a tank with pc.

I know how hard it is to wait, I really do. But I have to be honest and tell you that 1/3 watt per gallon, especially in a deeper tank is not going to be sufficent for animals that require lighting. Mushrooms don't require intense lighting, but they do need some, and 40 watts over a 125g isn't going to be enough. The only way you might possibly manage is if you had LR that went all the way up to the water line, and put the mushrooms right near the top. Or if the tank was in front of a window where they could get natural sunlight.
If it was me, I'd wait and save the money for better lighting.......

Ya, I think it is best to wait. So, would PC's be good for mushrooms and some of the soft corals (such as a toadstool leather or the bubble type corals? sorry...... don't remember if they are LPS or SPS?) <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

Sure, PC's would work great for them!
I'm having a hard time right now because I'm waiting for the refund tax check, and it's not getting here nearly fast enough!
I have all the money planned out on what I'm going to buy for my tanks. More LR, more PC lighting, then a clam after that, some more featherdusters, depending on how much is left over, maybe xenia or a hammer coral.....
This waiting is killing me!
I know that after all that, maybe a couple of months down the road, I'd like to set up a seahorse tank too. That means another tank! I also need to set up a tank for the freshwater angels I have, they're spawning again, and I'm getting the urge to raise the fry again! Wouldn't mind setting up a tank for some discus either! I also think my saltwater scissortail gobies are a pair......should set up a tank for them to see if they will spawn too........
I quit smoking a couple of years ago using the patch, I wonder if they make a patch for fish? LOL! ;)

Ok, but if I have NO coral, but Im worried about my Fiji rock coraline dying off, is 40 watt sufficient? Im about to go get a bulb for my 25 lbs of fiji. For 70 gallons, 250-300 watts, right?
Should I bother if I have no coral inverts?

With L/R I don't think that lighting matters but I could be mistaken.

Whan i had 40w of NO lighting(1-20w actinic and 1-10,000k) in my 45g, my purple and green coralne REALLY took off and looked great. When i upgraded to pc lights the purple & green started to die off a little but the pink took off. :) Also after i upgraded to pc lighting, i noticed new stuff on my L/R comming up. So i feel its a trade off when you switch from NO to pcs. :)

This is for Chrismilano~
40 watts over 70g isn't even 1/2 watt per gallon. To me at least, I would think that to keep the coralline going, you would need at least 1 to 2 wpg. The thing is, do you plan on keeping corals in the near future, way down the road or never? What I'm trying to get at is that you could go the cheap route and buy the double strip lights from Home Depot, and just get (appropriate) bulbs to fit. I had the double strips over the 55g (when it was running) and they worked out great. Had 80 watts (the 55g was a FW planted tank). As long as you bought bulbs that had the right spectrum, then it would be fine. If you plan to have corals in the near future, then I would say, don't worry about the coralline algae, and save your money for better lights like PC's or VHO's.......
It really depends on what you plan for your tank!
